Sexual Predators Hormone

Improved Essays
If hormones regulate sexual desire, should male or female sexual predators’ hormone levels be altered by surgery or hormone reducing drugs? Yes, however, this should not be considered as a resolution to placing them back in society. Because, these surgeries and or hormone reducing drugs are “not a completely effective treatment for sex offender” (Crooks& Baur, 2017, p. 165). Not all sexual predators get their sexual arousal from committing sexual acts against their victim. Some predators release sexual pleasure by anger and violence and having power and control over their victims. Many hormones influence our sexuality, arousal, response, and attraction, it is not confident that eliminating these hormones would be sufficient enough to end sexual

Statistics taken from Australian Correctional Services data reveal women make up just under five percent of sexual offenders. It is important to note that while this statistics give us an insight into the extent of sexual offending, they do not include every instance of sexual offences. Failed and unreported cases are not considered within much of the existing sexual offence data (Fisher & Beech 2004: 27). This means that they are not examined when a treatment’s success and its reality are measured, making it difficult to accurately measure cognitive behavioural therapies value in reducing sex offender recidivism…

    Sex Offenders

In my opinion, sex offenses do receive special attention in the criminal justice system. I believe this because of laws that have been implemented in recent years that focus specifically on sex offenders, the way the public and larger community perceive them as a unique group, and the growing apprehension of the group due to the severe impact sex crimes have. The first reason I believe that sex offenses receive special attention is because of the strict laws and policies that have demonstrable consequences to those that commit them. An example is the introduction of the SVP legislation, "an SVP is defined as any person who has been convicted of or charged with a sexually violent offense and who suffers from a mental abnormality or personality…

As with many social problems, the question of labeling a sex offender on a national registry is met with many different options. The different viewpoints of the offender, the victim, the family, and the administrators of justice must all be taken into consideration. This can make it difficult to disperse a clear and uninformed form of justice in these types of crimes. Being placed on the national sex offenders registry changes a person 's life dramatically and I feel the punishment should fit the crime. They are restricted from living and working in certain areas that seem common to regular citizens whose lives are not under constant surveillance.…

Sex offenders have been a serious problem for our criminal justice system at all levels. According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s NCVS, study shows that there is an average of 293,066 victims of the age of twelve and older that are raped or sexual assaulted each year (2009). The violent act of a sexual assault is a disturbance to a victim's life not only the act, but the hurt of the victim having to be victimized again during court proceedings sometimes facing a repeat offender. An article by the name of “sex Offenders and Sex Crime Recidivism: Investigating the Role of Sentence Length and Time Served,” discusses the efficacy on why sex offenders reoffend again.…

Issues regarding sex offenders can be found at all levels of the correctional system. During entry and housing in jails while waiting sentencing, to housing in prisons, and then again when a sex offender enters probation or parole. Leaders in the corrections field have closely worked with psychology experts to find a viable solution on a multitude of problems these specific offenders pose. One of the problem area’s solutions is the concept of behavior modification. Behavior modification is not a new concept as far as corrections is concerned; some say that the whole corrections process is geared towards behavior modification.…

Sex can not only be non-consensual and consensual, but also bartered, primarily for goods and services. Thus, there exists a continuum of sexual interactions within correctional facilities among inmates, staff persons, as well as visitors. Regardless of these findings based on contemporary institutions, there still exists a social-sexual hierarchy considering male inmates are more predatory in nature than female inmates. With the latter group of inmates continuing to cope with their incarceration based on emotional needs, although the initial reasons were purely for sexual gratification purposes. Such recent research can combat the misconception of prison rape based on findings that revealed a majority of sexual interactions in these institutions are consensual rather than coercive, if not evolve from coercive to consensual over the inmates time being incarcerated.…

Hart-Kerkhoffs decided to study the frequency of mental disorders in a particular type of juvenile offenders, sexual offenders in relationship to the recidivism rate. Two separate groups of juvenile offenders, one with child victims, and the other with teen or adult victims were studied, and of these groups 75% of them were found to have a mental disorder (Hart-Kerkhoffs, 2015). This shows the overwhelming rate of mental disorders amongst juvenile offenders, even finding more than one disease in many offenders. Additionally, two thirds of the youths were functionally weakened (Hart-Kerkhoffs, 2015). It is even estimated that a significant of rapes are committed juveniles, so that “26% of all sex offenders… and 36% of all sex offenders with juvenile victims were minors” (Hart-Kerkhoffs, 2015).…

Reality TV has been around since the late 1940’s when Allen Funt headlined a show called Candid Camera. This was followed in 1950 with a show named Truth or Consequences. The 1970’s had programs called Real People and That’s Incredible. These shows were, for the most part, considered wholesome entertainment that the entire family could watch and were quite tame in comparison to what is on television today. Reality TV exploded in the 2000’s and it remains one of the most popular genres in television.…

However, there are some studies that demonstrate that “After chemical castration, these patients experienced reductions in frequency and intensity of sexual drive, frequency of masturbation and sexual fantasies.” (Koo, 2013) “Serial hormonal evaluations showed an association between testosterone level and degree of paraphilic and non-paraphilic sexual thoughts.” It appears that when proper precautions are taken, chemical castration may be an effective treatment strategy for paraphilic and non-paraphilic sex offenders. Even without guarantees, it is the responsibility of society to take any and all necessary actions to assure the safety of its members. Some, object to the idea of preventing the ability of sexual offenders to engage in intercourse, on the grounds of civil liberties, but, in my opinion, I find it significantly more important to protect the rights of victims, especially children, rather than the freedoms of…

Castration was a consideration made for offenders of this type and in considering this method it was determined that removal of the phallus would not thwart the behavior. Not all sexual offenders or pedophiles commit crimes involving penetration, therefore, removing the phallus would not stop re-offense, but if the testes were removed the testosterone levels would significantly decrease thus reducing the sexual drive. Initially many believed this approach was a great solution but were eventually met with opposition as many considered this cruel and unusual punishment and that the long term side effects would outweigh the benefits of this procedure. Pharmacological treatment came along as a solution to claims of cruel and unusual punishment…
