Certain parts of the article discuss the possible causes for the misogyny found in rap lyrics from many differing points of view. The author begins by giving a brief introduction to the topic and then analyzing these topics from different angles, such as feminism, masculinity, and sociology. Many different opinions are commented on. This is a very effective approach, as it gives the reader a vast amount of opinions and allows them to interpret the information in any way they want, making them able to come up with their own opinion on the matters. Some causes of misogynistic lyrics in hip hop were outlined in the article. The first was that misogynistic lyrics are a reflection of men’s fears and anxieties originating from women’s ability to control men’s sexuality. Others state that the misogynistic views root from society, and are created and perpetuated by white-supremacist capitalist patriarchy or corporate structures. Most believe it reflects the values the rappers grew up with, since many grow up in underprivileged neighbourhoods where violence against women may be justified as a result of things such as the growth of “prison culture”. All opinions stated were backed up by studies with experimentation. The author concludes that although the opinions stated were all thought-provoking, none discuss how the lyrical content regarding sexuality and gender relationships should have changed with all of the large changes in the genre itself. This conclusion is well supported in the thoughts drawn in the conclusion explaining the author’s opinion, where they criticize all of the differing opinions and suggest what research should be done in the future.
