Sexual Harassment Is Wrong

Improved Essays
In the world we live in today, we have become accustomed to turning the other cheek to things that may or may not be wrong. When someone thinks of the term sexual harassment, he or she might think of a simple wolf-whistle or commenting on someone’s appearance; however, the list continues on. Sexual harassment can come in many forms and multiple perspectives. The questions “Is sexual commenting really wrong?” and “Should we do something about it?” have been strung out for far too long. Sexually harassing women, whether it be in the workplace, in school, or in daily life, is wrong because it degrades women, promotes isolation, and gives the perpetrator a sense of domination over their victim. According to Erica Katz, interns are not only victims of having to perform silly tasks without pay, but they are also the victims of sexual harassment in the business world. There have also been laws and acts proposed to protect younger people in the workplace whether it be for more/equal pay and in this case, protection against sexual harassment from superiors or equals. The Federal Intern Protection Act would give young employees the same treatment and would close the discrimination gap; "There should be no legal grey area when we are talking about preventing sexual harassment and discrimination in the workplace," claims Republican Elijah Cummings on the matter. While also degrading to women, sexual commenting and harassment can be physically and mentally damaging. But what is she thinking in her mind? In addition to this video evidence, a 2008 study put on by Holly Kearl for the Stop Street Harassment campaign proved that street harassment was directly related to anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and trouble focusing at school or work (Huffington

My AP Literature teacher, Mr. Mercer, once asked my class a serious question: why do women apologize so much? A thoughtful pause followed while the class, females especially, pondered the answer. My teacher elaborated with a short anecdote about a female student from a previous class: Mr. Mercer was standing in front of the doorway before class, speaking with another student. The female student approached the doorway so Mr. Mercer and the student courteously moved out of the way. The female student nodded and uttered a quick “sorry” as she hustled past them.…

If you bring a sex harassment case in court, getting through it may seem almost as difficult as the harassment itself. Many victims of sexual harassment suffer damage to their self-esteem, they often feel powerless and may even believe that they are at blame for the harassment. Some victims also feel stigmatized; that no one believes them; or that no one thinks what they endured is serious.…

Interactionist theorists would suggest these behaviours would inherently continue through cultural transmission, similarly to the generational cycle of poverty. The most common form of sexual harassment in the Australian workforce is “inappropriate comments,” following indecent messages and unwanted touching (Jericho, 2015). This was clearly evidential in the survey (see appendix A). In attempting to improve the effectiveness of anti-discrimination law and organisational practices to eliminate sexual harassment, it must be acknowledged that despite increased community awareness of the problem since the implementation of the Sex Discrimination Act 1984, sexual harassment has been a persistent problem (Leadership for Women, 2013).…

Catcalling is one form of sexual harassment that is a large problem that women face in our society. In a recent study done by Cornell University, it was revealed that eighty-five percent of women in the United States have experienced catcalling by the time that they were seventeen, and seventy-seven percent of women admitted that they have revealed that being followed by a male made them feel unsafe and insecure in the past year (qtd. in Rittenhouse). The fact that these statistics are so high is atrocious. Catcalling has become so common in our society that over half of the female population has been subjected to it.
