Sexual Harassment In The Media

Decent Essays
I’ve been meaning to write about this subject for while now and it’s been covered extensively by the media for last couple of months. I’ve seen other women and girls posting #metoo and I did not have the the mental strength or fortitude to do so at the time myself.

I’ve experienced all levels of sexual harassment from just walking down the street to a professional environment. I’ve been made to feel over and over again that this was my fault that some how by breathing or merely existing brought on all of this.
I’ve been sent unsolicited dick pics and degrading messages.

I’ve been made to feel unsafe, stalked and harassed and followed my men who would not take no for answer. I’ve been sexually assaulted on public transport and have experienced

This movement is breaking down the taboos that traditionally silenced conversations about women’s rights. The #MeToo movement is an attempt to get people to understand the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault in society. The #MeToo movement is powerful and inspiring because it was created by women to help women by coming together and supporting each other through tough times. Women are standing up to show that men cannot get away with mistreating the other gender because they might see them as “the weaker sex.” There will be consequences for your actions.…

#MeToo is a thing going around of Facebook and Twitter and other social media of sorts. It is a sort of ‘trend’ where people will post online saying #MeToo, this means that you have been sexually harassed at some point in your life. Reese Witherspoon went live on TV and talked about #MeToo and how she was assaulted by a director when she was only 16 years old. More people still are talking about why the arent posting #MeToo even if the have been harassed. Some say that they aren’t posting their stories because they are worried that their harassers will see their posts and they will recognize them.…

We need everyone to work together to overcome what is a serious problem all over the world. People all over the world started Tweeting #MeToo to acknowledge that they’ve been sexually harassed/assaulted and that they want the whole world to know. “It’s the hashtag that rocked the world. Since #MeToo went viral two weeks ago in the wake of sexual harassment allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein, Twitter reports that more than 1.7 million women and men have used the hashtag in 85 countries.” (LaMotte).…

For this project i researched crime in the media, specifically how women are portrayed in that subject. What I found really surprising was the amount of bias against men in the media, regardless of the political leanings of the source or where it was written. Where men would get mug shots, women would get selfies, which, as a feminist, I found atrocious. This clear injustice against men is a clear example of the double standards in today’s society, with all the people claiming that women have it so hard and that “white cis male scum can get away with anything!”. But my research showed that it’s just the opposite.…

Fortunately, I am not someone who felt I needed to tweet or post #MeToo. Although I would be lying if I said I had never been in situations (yes, more than once) where a boy's words or actions could have easily turned into sexual assault. I am lucky that I don't have a personal story to share, but I know people that have been sexually assaulted and harassed that hash-tagged their story and I know others that have been sexually assaulted and harassed that did not. For those of you who don't know, #MeToo was made popular by actress Alyssa Milano on October 15.…

Sexual harassment has serious emotional effects on its victims. It can also do damage to a victim's career. If you bring a sex harassment case in court, getting through it may seem almost as difficult as the harassment itself. Many victims of sexual harassment suffer damage to their self-esteem, they often feel powerless and may even believe that they are at blame for the harassment. Some victims also feel stigmatized; that no one believes them; or that no one thinks what they endured is serious.…

Many also think that this only effects women, but the media has set strict standards for men too. Chase Holmberg, a gym owner said it perfectly, “As a nation, everybody seems to be concerned about their weight… Even if people don't need to lose weight. I see people walk through the door and who don't need to lose weight, but think that they do. People have a bad image of themselves and don't need to have it” (Klass).…

Sexual harassment has always been, and still is, an extremely controversial topic. Some people tend to think that sexual harassment cases are all stemmed from lies made up by victims to gain attention or sympathy. Others, however, see sexual harassment as a serious crime that has been locked away in a vault and ignored by society. Whichever side one takes, the fact that sexual harassment and sexual discrimination laws play an important part in many aspects of society still stands. From the beginning of time, humans have struggled in deciding what rights certain groups should or should not have, and, slowly, everyone started to be set upon the same plane.…

I truly enjoyed reading your post. You made some very important points about domestic violence in the media, and the actions of the viewers in relation to domestic violence. I did not fully think about how domestic violence is somewhat covered up, not talked about, or either put as old news in the NFL. Based on that, that is not fair that women who may be victims to violence do not have the opportunity to speak out. It can be due to fear, or they are being paid not to say something to keep players careers from being in jeopardy.…

The Employment Discrimination law protects all workers from sexual harassment or any other type of discrimination and is dictated on the level of both federal and state. The Title VI of Civil Rights Acts of 1964, which is enforced by US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, makes it unlawful and illegal to discriminate someone because of their national origin, religion, color, race or sex. Any physical or verbal behavior of sexual nature, sexual advances that are not welcomed, or request for sexual favors are generally the description of sexual harassment. Cases of sexual harassment are mostly recorded at work place. Like the government, many firms and even small businesses have put in place measures to prevent their employees from sexual…

Swedish celebrities such as Tove Lo, Robyn, Alicia Vikander and Zara Larsson have all come forth supporting the ##metoo cause with different variations such as ‘#tystnadtagning: #närmusikentystnar. ’(Jag Vågade Aldrig Berätta). A multitude of people are actively taking a step into fighting against sexual harassment, an example is the ‘Time’s Up’ movement which ‘opposes sexual violence and supports women, men, people of colour, and the LGBT community who have less access to media platforms and funds to speak up about harassment’(Our Mission). When Oprah Winfrey spoke of “a new day on the horizon” perhaps this was what she meant, that the ones who assaults women will be exposed and reprimanded and that sexual violence would not have to be a problem in the future because it simply should not exist. A new day is indeed on the horizon because despite the current fragile state of humanity, women and men have and will emerge more courageous, stronger and…

Sexual harassment in the workplace is a hazard encountered in the working place across the world. It reduces the quality of working life, jeopardizes the well-being of both working men and women, and imposes costs on firms and organizations. The issue pertaining to sexual harassment in the workplace has been addressed by several international groups like the United Nations (UN), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the European Union (EU), the Caribbean community (CARICOM), and the organization of American States (OAS) as a human right violation, a form of violence, and discrimination. Since sexual harassment in the workplace pollutes the working environment and can have a devastating effect upon the health, confidence, morale and performance…
