Sexual Harassment In Prisons

Yes, there is a lot wrong with that situation. No one should ever be spoken to or touched like that, especially by an employee. Such behavior can be considered verbal and sexual harassment because that’s very inappropriate. The statement also comes off as a bribe, which is also unacceptable behavior. If I saw that occur between an officer and an offender I would ask the co-worker about the exchange to begin with and if I feel the person will continue to act unprofessionally I would report the situation to my boss because someone would need to know about it. For example, “an all-female prison” in Ohio had dealt with 19 reported instances of sexual relations between officers and offenders in 2012 and 2013 (Sweigart & Seitz, 2014, para. 1). Multiple of the prison’s employees had been fired while others were under investigation (Sweigart & Seitz, 2014). One officer at the Ohio prison had sexual relations with an inmate in exchange for drugs and tobacco (Sweigart & Seitz, 2014). There is evidence that supports the inappropriate behavior of the officers and inmates, such as “love letters, DNA evidence of sex and secretly recorded conversations that led to employees being fired, allowed to resign or transferred to another facility after spending months on paid leave” (Sweigart & Seitz, 2014, para. 4). Relations between officers and inmates should not exist because officers are there to watch over the inmates and ensure security, not acting inappropriately (Sweigart & Seitz, 2014). It’s important that correctional officers are trained about sexual misconduct and how to refrain from getting involved with prisoners (Sweigart & Seitz, 2014).
