Sex education in schools is important, but most students that are in a sexual education class have a distorted view of sexuality. They also do not have a good understanding of the word contraception and how to have safe-sex practices. Abstinence-only programs in public schools have become popular because of a law that gives millions of dollars to schools that will teach this program. This program has a great intention of persuading their youth to wait until marriage before having sex, but abstinence-only program is not achieving this goal. Sexual education program should be taught in schools to assist children to clarify their individual, family, and community values. Another reason these programs should be in schools is to prevent teen pregnancy from happening, while a student is still in school. These programs should be in schools, also, to have clear goals, in order to prevent HIV and other STIs.

“In a recent study, 94 percent of adults and 93 percent of parents said that sex education should cover contraception. Only 15 percent of Americans wanted abstinence-only education taught in the classroom” (McKeon). Many students do not think that if they have unprotected sex that they will get a disease from it, but that is highly mistaken. Even if an individual is a virgin and the partner they are with is not a virgin, that virgin can still get the disease that their partner has. Every individual, regardless if they have had sexual intercourse or not, should be tested for HIV/AIDS and other STDs. The only way that an individual is going to find out if they have something like this is to be checked by a doctor; many people does not realize
