Essay 8: Sexual Attractions Corey, Corey, Coe and Callanan (2011) have said that the client and therapist should not engage in personal relationships because this can negative impact the mental health intervention. This is because either or both party can become emotionally entangled which may result in distorted judgment. As such, either party may not be able to relate in a professional manner and therefore the counseling intervention is set to fail. Corey, Corey, Coe and Callanan (2011) posits that practitioners should enroll in programs that provide training in the necessary content areas that will give them the skills and abilities to become highly trained professionals. As such, it is suggested that potential students perform a careful review of the school’s curriculum before enrolling to make sure that the courses will prepare them for the career path that they wish to follow. Corey, Corey, Coe and Callanan (2011) have also said that the school should provide the core knowledge that aligns with the area that the student wants to go in. In my personal quest, I have chosen to obtain a Master’s degree in Counseling because I wish to help clients with their addictive behaviors. As such, I make sure that the areas of focus and research while enrolled in this program refer to addictive behavior so that I can have a clear understanding of what it is before I actually counsel anyone. I will maintain my competence by continually reading scholarly journals that have been peer-reviewed and by attending professional conferences when time permits. These will serve to keep be aware of industry standards that can be used as best
