The Importance Of A Sexual Assault

Sexual assaults are an unfortunate occurrence in the modern military. They can be very difficult to deal with in a command, but the fact of the matter is that they happen quite often. The annual report from SAPR (2014) is that there were 4768 service members that reported a sexual assault, either unrestricted or restricted. Furthermore, there were around 18,900 estimated cases of unwanted sexual conduct, shared between men and women. These numbers have increased over time, 2289 reported in 06 for example, but this may be due to the fact that the Navy and all branches are pushing for victims to come out, either to their command or a friend. As junior officers in the Navy/Marine Corps it is likely that we will face these assaults in our divisions, fire teams, and others. So how does a junior officer handle these assaults? …show more content…

Knowing everyone under you and the way they act can be key in handling a sexual assault. Lastly, the junior officer must be an objective investigator. Not all cases hold true per the definition of sexual assault. Sexual assault is a serious crime that is extremely consequential in the United States, especially within the U.S. Armed Forces. Although sexual assault is a serious crime in and out of the military, the military seems to look over the issue. According to an article by Jennifer Koons, the Pentagon has stated, approximately 3,000 service members reported being sexually assaulted in 2012. While that number is somewhat large, a confidential Department of Defense survey suggests an even bigger number closer to 26,000 (14,000 were men), 8 times more than reported by the Pentagon. Although some reports are filed, this situation identifies that instead of conducting thorough investigations, they simply did not care.…

While more than half of sexual assaults against women of college age occur off campus, on campus assaults are a problem that college and universities can and should do more to address. The best statistics show there is a correlation between 3 factors, alcohol use, sorority membership, and class status, and sexual assault on campus. To combat these trends colleges and universities need to address these factors while taking into account that any measures they take not simply move the problem from campus to off campus locations. This means that the measures taken should be centered on raising awareness, encouraging responsibility, and holding offenders accountable in a just way, while also addressing the campus code of conduct.…

While statutory rape laws are in place to protect minors of both sexes who have been sexually victimized by adults, there is a tendency for those enforcing the law to take the side of the female, and the older the accused is, the harsher the penalty is likely to be. Age, gender, or even sexual orientation can sometimes be contributory factors in harsher punishments handed down by those enforcing the law. Due to this bias, laws that are meant to protect minors from adults, often make allowance for other adolescents to be indicted as well. This information brings about the question of whether or not the laws regarding statutory rape are discriminatory in their wording, and what can be done to change this?…
