Good morning/afternoon year 12 students. Schoolies is a celebration of the year’s grade 12 students. It is meant to be a time of fun and remembrance. It is often referred to as a ‘Rite of Passage’ for graduated 17-18 year olds. But it can and has turned into a dangerous meeting of teenagers who are unable to assess risk and therefore, find themselves in dangerous situations. Today I will be talking to you about sexual assault during schoolies celebrations; what it is, risks, and possible preventative measures to limit the statistical likely hood of this being a reality for attendees.

However, this is not to say that it does not happen to males who attend; it may be occurring less and or reported less. It can be extrapolated from the RAINN’s 2006 report; wherein it was found that males make up 10% or more of sexual assault victims, that there must be numerous unreported cases of this occurring to male school leavers during schoolies.
Numerous research endeavors document a myriad of harmful effects experienced by victims of sexual assault. The psychological and emotional effects include: intense fear of death and disassociation during the assault; anxiety and ongoing fears; feelings of low self-esteem, self-blame, and guilt; shock, confusion, and denial; self-harm, suicidal ideation and attempted suicide; and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Physical impacts due to sexual assault comprise of: chronic diseases, headaches, eating disorders, gynaecological symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome, and damage to the urethra, vagina or anus, and unplanned
