There are two reasons for this: the cases are dismissed for something like alcohol, and victims don’t have the resources they need from institutions.
Many people believe that the problem with why sexual assault happens so often on college campuses is the constant alcohol abuse. In the article, “Stopping Campus Rape,” Ross Douthat elaborates one of his main points that assault cases usually involve alcohol and incapacitation, and the offender is usually someone the victim knows. He believes that by changing the drinking age from 18 to 21, students would develop responsibility towards drinking.
Douthat is correct when it comes to rape happening in the context that it makes it difficult to prosecute the offender, but this is not the fault of the alcohol. If legislators start regulating alcohol we giving the idea that these offender are not responsible for the things they do to their victims. If the drinking age is changed we are blaming the alcohol for and in that blaming victims for having been drunk at the time of the offence. Universities all over the country should offer students a outlet where they get their information on this subject. If higher education institutions offered these resources students would feel more confident about coming out on their incidents. These programs would also allow the public an insight on what sexual assault victims go through.
These education programs could also influence the university community to respect women. That is the main cause of sexual assault is the lack of respect that women get. Women walk around believing that they have to fit a norm. Society’s view that women have to dress a certain way, and not go out at a certain time for the fear of what might happen to them. If nothing is done to change this view women will still be living. Institutions should not be conforming to this way of thinking on their
