With these safety precautions how are rapes on campuses still a national problem? College is a breeding ground for parties and drinking which can put hundreds of strangers into one place. That alone is cause for problems but when 62% of women know their rapist they feel safe right up until the incident (Press, 2014). Though alcohol is a leading factor of sexual assaults being intoxicated cannot and will not justify rape (O'Connor & Kingkade, 2016). Beth Howard (Howard, 2015) states in her article that “Women often assume they will get more careful and sympathetic treatment if they take their case to the administration than to the police, but, in the absence of clear policies, they frequently don't get satisfaction”.
Many colleges including The University of Michigan and Michigan State have created a Special Victims Unit which is supposed to aid in better evidence gathering and how to approach a sexual assault case with sensitivity (Howard, 2015). There is also a large amount of colleges who have hired sex-crimes investigator to investigate and prosecute allegations.
