Stranger Rape Research Paper

Did you know that 97 out of 100 rapists go unpunished and walk away free from the consequences of their crime? What is worse is that 75% of the time, 'walking away ' means to the next room or work the next day for most victims due to the fact that 75% of reported rapes are acquaintance rapes or familial assaults. Aside from media interpretation, stranger rapes only make up 25% of reported sexual assaults. The other day on the news there was a report of sexual assault and the reporters were discussing how the police handled the situation and were concerned as to why the police were not on top of these kinds of things and the cops said "there is nothing that we can do about sexual assault unless we know about it, and unless people start reporting it, there is nothing …show more content…
How often do you hear of a family member or local resident being arrested for sexual assault? Sure, you hear talk but, how many times do these people actually face the consequence of their crime? Only three out of every one hundred people that sexually assault somebody will spend time in jail. The reason that this issue goes mostly unreported is that because as stated before, 75% of rape is acquaintance or familial; therefore, women and children, the physically weaker group of people, are either bullied into keeping the atrocities hidden, they are ashamed that a family member or friend would take advantage of and do that to them, they fear 'betraying ' a family member or friend and setting forth on a journey that most likely destines the rapist to time in prison, or they misinterpret the act with something acceptable, deserved, or confuse it with the affection of a male

Can you imagine walking down the street and passing a sex offender? Odds are you have passed something like three in the last month. Now imagine passing a victim. It is likely that you have seen more than can even be calculated, primarily due to the fact that most victims do not report their attack. While these numbers are not prudent to my argument, I would like the idea of perpetrators and victims to ruminate in your head for a bit.…

Police can and should be involved in sexual assault cases, but only with the victim’s consent. Even if the victim did choose to get the police involved in his or her case, would the police be able to solve it? Would the attacker be convicted? Research shows that less than three percent of rapists are actually convicted. Attorney Brandt-Young says “the accused student deserves a timely resolution, and these police investigations can literally go on for months or even years.”…

Many people want them to be put away for life with no bars held. Others go for more humane routes and suggest they be placed in therapy. Many times victims view that it is up to them to perpetrate awareness about sexual assaults and speaking out about their experiences. The unfortunate downfall of this is that many people unaware of the details of the case will blindly support the accused thinking the victim is overreacting or attacking the “innocent” offender because they want attention. It is especially difficult when the sex offender does not fit the stereotype of a creepy or inappropriately behaved individual to the public eye.…

The police in New York have adopted a new method of cracking down on gang violence. Instead of, as the article described, “spending a great deal of time pounding the pavement for information that might lead to arrests”, they have begun using the internet to their advantage. Their reasoning in doing so is that criminals can incriminate themselves by bragging online or classifying themselves as gang members. There is, however, some controversy surrounding the use of the internet to catch gang bangers. Some believe it was an infringement in the fourth amendment right, because the police have access to both private and public posts.…

Since the early 1990’s, there has been statistically an insignificant amount of data collected on cases of police brutally involving young, men and women in America. These past few years, these particular types of cases have been highlighted and placed at the forefront of mainstream media. Recent incidences involving police brutality such as what happened to Mike Brown, Eric Graner and, of course Aiyana Stanley-Jones, have triggered an outcry for more information on police brutality cases. Unfortunately, because of what’s happening, the news has portrayed these victims as criminals while the police are viewed as icons by giving their audiences more opinion based data rather than statistical research. From both the citizens and law enforcement,…

    Social Norms In America

It is disappointing that society constantly labels what constitutes as “beautiful”, this creates stress among the female gender, who then have to consort to what is considered the social norm. The majority of elite high society members don’t address racism in America until a huge incident involving hate crimes or death comes out. This then creates an upheaval in the rest of the social classes because they were already aware of the hostility among the people. It is unfortunate that the majority of sexual assault crimes go overlooked in America, and that even speaking about rape or molestation is considered to be taboo.…

If I were to ask people how they feel towards survivors of rape or sexual assault, the majority would respond with feelings of sympathy, concern, and wishes for the victim to recover. If this is true, and rape is a universally condemned, abhorrent crime, why are the victims of such a crime not treated with the same level of respect as those of other crimes? Rape and sexual assault are some of the most psychologically damaging offenses, with only 37% of women feeling fully recovered from their assault after a period of four to six years (Burgess and Holmstrom, 1979). Lack of support from family members, society, and the justice system following their rape or sexual assault is sure to contribute to this lack of recovery. Even our own laws…

A manifestation of the unsupportive communities often found on college campuses can be seen by comparing rates at which non-students reported sexual assaults and rapes to the rates of college students. Non-student victims in the age bracket of eighteen to twenty-four years old were twelve percent more likely to report rape and sexual assault than student victims in the same age group (Sinozich and Langton). Although other factors could play into this discrepancy in reporting rates, such as the aforementioned lack of faith in university penal systems, expected judgment and culpability from the community play into the victims’ decisions to stay quiet about the assault they experienced (Zeldin). If community members were better informed on sexual assault and specifically trained on how to react to a survivor’s account of the sexual assault, victims would feel greater support from others. In effect, a more amicable social climate would be present for victims post-assaults.…

    Sexual Assault Stereotypes

Over the past decade, sexual assault has become very topical and newsworthy. The spotlight has become brighter with what is seemingly a constant stream of reports on college campuses and churches across the country and throughout the military. Thanks to a renewed effort to create awareness, legislation (Title IX) and more aggressive prosecution, women (and men) have become more comfortable reporting such abuses. One ugly theme with respect to sexual assault, abuse, or rape is the misconceptions and stereotypes that it carries. It was somehow the victim’s fault.…

Even our judicial system treats sexual assault on par with white collar crimes or theft depending on the perpetrators’ socioeconomically background, compared to the reaction to more inhumane crimes such as murder. Robbery victims are never told that they are at fault for flashing a nice sports car or nice suit, nor they are never asked why they didn’t struggle with the robber or scream for help. Although it is unheard of for these questions to be asked of robbery victims, these questions and conclusions are the norm for victims of sexual assault. This attitude from society is unique to sexual assault…

Rape is a silent epidemic amongst many contradicting topics. I say silent because there are a high number of rapes compared to the very low number of reports. Something so obvious can also be oblivious to many especially when an individual isn’t aware that even they can become a victim of sexual assault. It’s so easy to think this way when you or anyone you know hasn’t come face to face with sexual assault. Many of these individuals are college students especially those on or near college campuses that are constantly on the go to attend class, parties, extracurricular activities etc.…
