Sexual assault is any unwanted sexual activity that occurs without clear consent from both individuals. Sexual assault is never the victim’s fault. No one has the right to have sexual contact with you without your consent. Various forms of sexual assault include:
• Rape. Sexual assault is called rape if penetration has occurred (vaginal, oral, or anal).
• Incest.
• Human sexual trafficking.
• Unwanted touching.
• Sexual harassment.
• Any form of sexual activity that occurs when a person is unable to give consent.
Sexual assault can happen to a person of any age, gender or race. It can be committed by a stranger or by someone you know, and it can include force, threats, or pressure to engage in sexual activity that you do not want.
• Sexual assault may cause health problems for the person who was assaulted, including:
• Physical injuries in the genital area or other areas of the body.
• Unwanted pregnancy.
• Sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
• Psychological problems, such as:
○ Anxiety.
○ Depression.
○ Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It is important to get medical care as soon as possible after a sexual assault. Your health care provider may:
• Perform a physical exam.
• Test for infections.
• Test for pregnancy, if this applies.
