I am looking to see what factors contribute to the occurrence of sexual assault in prison; specifically, does a man’s sexual orientation increase the likelihood of him being a target for sexual assault in prison. Also, I am looking at how we are able to use these different predictors to help prevent a possible assault from occurring in the prison system. Many inmates who are locked up due to drugs are still addicted. Many of those who are recently incarcerated have not had a detox period and therefore, still rely heavily on different drugs. This leads to the inmates doing whatever they can in order to gain access to drugs. Yap (2011) discovered that heroin and other drugs lead to higher rates of sexual assault. The victims are often in debt to their suppliers in the prison. The suppliers then allow (force) the ‘customers’ to pay their debt back with sexual favors. There is no apparent leeway in this situation. Knowles (1999) states that we should change the prison system as a whole. We should allow conjugal visits and home furlough. This may not be helpful due to the fact that sexual assault tends to be more about power rather than pleasure from the act. The home furlough may not be useful due to the dangers the inmate may cause to society. In addition to looking into conjugal visits and home furlough more, we could potentially isolate between consenting homosexuals or develop a classification system in which we would group inmates into separate cellblocks. This separation would include 4 different
