Every 107 seconds another sexual assault occurs. Sexual assault and rape are serious social and public health issues in the United States. Women are by far the most victims of sexual assault and rape, while men are nearly always the perpetrators. National surveys in the United States estimate that one in six women around the world has experienced an attempted or completed rape at some time. While one in five women are sexually assaulted on a college campus. The large majority of women are sexually assaulted by men with whom they are familiar with. Women are far less likely to report a rape or assault when they know their attacker. Sexual assaults are considerably under-reported. 68% of sexual assaults go unreported to the police. While 98% of rapist will never spend a day in jail or prison.
Sexual assault is any sexual activity to which you haven 't freely given your consent. This includes completed or attempted sex acts that are against someone 's will. Sometimes it can involve a victim who is unable to consent. It also includes abusive sexual contact. It can happen to men, women or children. The attacker can be anyone, a current or former partner, a family member, a person in position of power or trust, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger.
