Sexting Shame And Suicide Summary

Audrie Potts a high school sophomore in the Saratoga, California struggled with bullying, social media issues, anxiety, and abuse. Her battle ended on September 10, 2012. In her article “Sexting, shame and Suicide” Burleigh discussed the circumstances that brought Potts to commit suicide. Having been sexual assaulted and exposed on social media, Potts began to struggle with bullying and shame. The alarming situation that was only briefly mentioned in the article is that Potts is just one of the many who struggle with academic stress, bullying, depression, and suicidal ideations.
Suicide is in the top ten leading causes of death around the world (Bertolote, 2002). The question now is what risk factors or underlying causes can be associated with suicide and is there a correlation between countries. To find out about factors, worldwide information was studied and then prepared as an introduction to the subject, then narrowed down to three countries: USA, China, and India. Teachers, social workers, and psychologist have all worked to try to detect, prevent and assist students who show any sign of suicidal thoughts. According to WHO statistics (2011) there was a discrepancy between the suicide rates around the world when their statistics were gathered. Interesting enough three countries studied further USA, China, and India were all found that have specifics related to their own culture.
