1.1Background Information ‘Sexting’ is the deviant sexual behaviour of sending sexually explicit messages and/or images of yourself to another person via your mobile phone. This behaviour is most common among young adults who are (a) in a romantic relationship (b) at least one party wanting to be involved in one (c) sharing of photos with people outside of the relationship. Sexting is a popular phenomenon with teens and young adults today, and has become such a prominent sexual behaviour the word became recognized by Webster’s dictionary in 2012.

Before sexting people had phone sex, cybersex, and even writing erotic stories for one another (Knoblaunch, 2013). In 30,000 B.C. the paleo cave paintings are some of the first known erotic communication, depicting human sex acts (Knoblaunch, 2013). In the mid-20th century (1150 A.D.) carrier pigeons would send sexual calligraphic letters back and forth between lovers (Knoblaunch, 2013). In the 1990’s the pager became a popular tool for sexters to communicate throughout the day (Knoblaunch, 2013). In 1992 SMS texting was invented, soon to be used by not only famous figures but the general public as means of sexual exchanges (Knoblaunch, 2013). These explicit photographs can be uploaded to the internet permanently or forwarded to others who they were not meant for. The mixture of bad decisions, impulsive acts, sexual growth, and instant communication can result in dangerous repercussions. There are a number of reasons as to why is has become a societal ‘issue’. Firstly, there are many psychological issues associated with sexting. There is concern of young girls engaging in a form of sexual objectification with their bodies (Yoshihara, 2013). Studies have found that the young adults who participate in sexting experience embarrassment, anger, guilt, anxiety, shame, and fear. Secondly, there are numerous social effects as a result of sexting. Studies have found correlations with nymphomania, casual sex acts, blackmail, peer pressure, and cyber bullying (Yoshihara, 2013). Sexting is considered, in many academic institutions, as a form of cyber bullying because these sexual messages/images can be forwarded through their social media platforms (Yoshihara, 2013). Lastly, there are physical effects linked to sexting. Studies show that drinking alcohol, smoking, having many sexual companions, not using protection, and forced sexual activity are all linked to sexting (Yoshihara, 2013).
