There are many social problems that we as humans tend to hide or ignore. In this weeks readings it discussed the overview of sexism, racism, and privileged and oppression. There are more to just the definitions of these words that nobody tends to talk about. Power and systems of power play a role in these concepts. All these concepts discussed this week are important in understanding the underlying problem in society that is why we as humans cannot seem to get along.
“Privilege is defined as a thing that exist when one group has something of value that is denied to to others simply because of the groups they being to, rather than because of something they’ve done or failed to do” (21). For example, a white professor receives a lot more praise for a speech than if a black professor did the exact same speech. In America men are seen as masculine and tough without emotions so most people seek out a man’s direction rather than a women’s because women are looked at as emotional, sensitive, and kind. When a child is born we are taught to be a certain gender in result of your actual anatomical sex. Women and men might have differences but not to the point to where one should be superior and one should be inferior. Sexism is a hard concept to talk about because the people one goes to in order to receive help to stop this are the same ones who are male privileged, consequently that makes talking about the concept hard, which leads to nobody talking about an issue. John says, “if we can’t talk about an trouble, we cant do anything about it” (10). It’s a vicious cycle that will continue to happen unless the people who are privilege open up a safe dialogue to talk about the social problems going on in
