How much do you pay for shampoo? If you are a woman you are most likely paying a much higher price compared to what a man may be paying. Sexism has been an issue that has not been eradicated. An example of sexism today against women can be seen through the pink tax and the unfair pricing of products aimed for the purchase by women. As consumers in today's society, women are faced with more financial need when it comes to having to buy products in the stores. This can be seen when one looks at the fact how “women effectively paid an annual gender tax of approximately $1,351 for the same services as men” (De Blasio and Menin). Men and women usually need and buy the same type of products, but generally they buy the items that are aimed for the specific gender. Razors and shampoo are priced higher for women than men. These products that are aimed toward women “through packaging, description or name, might cost up to 50% more than similar products for men” (Maloney 4). Women and men are both likely to buy razors, it is important to realize that on average it can be seen in Table 5 in the NYC study that women are charged an average of $8.90 versus $7.99, which is the price men are being charged for razors (De Blasio and Menin 11). Not to mention that necessities for women are also being taxed for, and there are no other alternatives for these necessities. No other option for women but to spend the money and purchase the products. For example, “currently, women in most states must pay state sales tax on purchases of sanitary products”(Maloney 6). Sanitary products are necessities for women and women have no choice but to pay for these items with the tax on them, seeing as these items are things that without them women would …show more content…
Women “earn less- 21 percent less than men, on average” (Fried). The higher pricing on merchandise makes an impact on women when one considers that they are also being paid less compared to men. The small price difference may not be much at the time of purchase, yet financially it is something that can come to add up and affect women. It is important to realize that it is not just products similar to men that are being priced higher for women. It is also seen that “studies have shown that women are more likely than men to be denied credit, or pay higher costs to borrow”(Maloney); making it so women have to struggle in their everyday lives in many aspects. It is also seen that women are having to deal with being charged more for services, like buying cars.
