Have you experienced cat calling? Have you ever had comments made about your body that was inappropriate? Almost anytime I swim or leave the house without a male family member or friend, I experience harassment from middle-aged men; I am fifteen. Consequently, I feel uncomfortable and without control. Yelling and commenting on a woman's body not only on the street, but in any public place is an invasion of privacy and a form of sexual harassment, and catcalling shows the subtle sexism that is present in our society that allows men to think they are entitled to comment on our bodies. This issue isn't new, fall of 2012, Tatyana Fazlalizadeh took a stand and began putting posters of her art throughout Brooklyn telling men to stop the harassment (Turkewitz). Some people believe that catcalling is a compliment, that women only want to hear that they are “beautiful,” but I do not feel grateful for the “compliment.” I feel scared because I never know what the harasser's motives could be, because I lack the strength or skill to defend myself against adult men. A CDC study from 2012 revealed that almost 20% of women are raped in their lives. I feel afraid because I do not want to be the 1 out of 5, terrified of the possibility of being a rape victim. Why shouldn't we be fearful? An observation of mine is that the best way to deal with harassers is to ignore them, eventually they leave you alone. However, when women respond to harassers, the cat-callers use slurs and violent words, reinforcing the fear and expectation of violence in these

My AP Literature teacher, Mr. Mercer, once asked my class a serious question: why do women apologize so much? A thoughtful pause followed while the class, females especially, pondered the answer. My teacher elaborated with a short anecdote about a female student from a previous class: Mr. Mercer was standing in front of the doorway before class, speaking with another student. The female student approached the doorway so Mr. Mercer and the student courteously moved out of the way. The female student nodded and uttered a quick “sorry” as she hustled past them.…

Over the past few years, researchers have analyzed the general concept of microaggressions. However, little research has been done on how these microaggressions effect women. This research will study the increase in the perceived risk a woman has living her day to day life based on how microaggressions are used against women in today’s society. Doing Gender “Hey baby, how you doin’?” This can be a words woman appeal to, but only if it’s coming from their significant other. Most of the time women in big cities hear these statements, it’s from a complete stranger. This is scary to most of the women who have to endure this type of verbal abuse. They are unable to realize what these catcallers consider to be a compliment from a threat to their personal space and peace of mind.…

Sexual Harassment Based on the criteria of pathos, ethos, and logos, the editorial column is better rhetorically than the editorial cartoon. The purpose of this paper is to compare an editorial column and an editorial cartoon. The two texts I am comparing is the editorial cartoon by Gustavo Rodriguez and the editorial column by Megan Humphries on sexual harassment. I am comparing them because sexual assault is a big issue in our world today.…

Anisa, I like how you interpret the video with the article by Gross!! And I totally agree with you and what your saying, regardless of the gender any type of cat calling is unacceptable and it can belittle the person. I think in general catcalling is disgusting and degrading, even if a woman is the one catcalling. Furthermore, when you said, “men do not feel endangered by women the same way women may feel endangered by men”. I think it is because of what women went through and there has been many cases involving with harassment and majority of them are men.…

Universities across our nation undoubtedly idolize the concept of diversity, speaking proudly of the numerous enrolled students who come from different states, countries, and even continents and issuing scholarship to those they declare diverse enough to receive. I, however, am not the definition of diversity in any way. Born and raised in America, I am an eighteen-year-old girl from a middle-class, white family located in Kentucky. This puts me in a situation where the majority of people I see, both in real life and not, look and act just like me. Surprisingly enough, this does not make me feel proud, but rather, uncomfortable.…

Amanda Stevenson Professor Bradley WC 201 29 November 2016 She Didn’t Ask for It Modesty is determined differently in varying countries and regions of the world; differences range from regional climate to religious influences, with other factors in between. The topic of modesty is often directed at women, suggesting it is the duty of woman to act and dress modestly as a preventative measure for the people around her. This mindset not only questions the independence of women, but also creates a black hole of automatic victimization for women; moreover, other than skewed societal expectations, there is no documentation that cites modesty as a burden solely for women.…
