Sexism in Everything America has come a long way facing sexism through time. In the forties, women were expected to be a housewife, now women are taking on jobs that most people thought only men could do. Even though there have been breakthroughs, there are still some issues that should be addressed. No matter who you are or where you are from there will be a time when you will be exposed to sexism. Sexism is a category of oppression where people discriminate others based on their sex or gender. This can range all the way from just casual remarks that are easily let go to very extreme cases that could affect a person for the rest of their life. The word “female” means a person of the sex that is capable of bearing children. Therefore, when someone is called a female they are being reduced to their reproductive abilities and that is dehumanizing. Also, the word is most often used to imply inferiority. Some other words that are offensive to women are a pussy, bitch, slut and cunt. Although you have probably heard these words in conversation, most people do not understand the real meaning behind them. In the accurate sense “pussy” refers to a vagina. In a lingo sense, it is mostly used to mock the men and indicate that they are a coward. The two main interpretations of a“bitch” are: a woman who is rude or strong willed, or when applied to men it is used to indicate weakness or ineptitude. In Saudi Arabia, women are not allowed to drive. A militant group called Lashkar-e-Jabar forced Muslim women in Kashmir to wear head to toe garments that cover their clothes. Saudi women have to be escorted by a male guardian known as a 'mahram' whenever they leave their home. “In one extreme case, a teenager reported that she had been gang-raped, but because she was not with a mahram when it occurred, she was punished by the court. The victim was given more lashes than one of her alleged rapists received,” the Washington Post reported. The most extreme case of sexism is what is known as sex trafficking. Sex trafficking is a form of modern slavery that occurs throughout the United States and globally. Sex traffickers use violence, threats, and other forms of intimidation to enforce children and adults to engage in financial sexual acts against their will. Many victims became romantically involved with a person who then forced them or manipulated them into prostitution. Others are brought in with false promises of a job like modeling or dancing.
