Sexism In Our Society

Haven’t we gotten over it?” Sadly, the answer is no. The most common example of differing actions towards the sexes is the famous “double standard.” Let’s say that the setting is a public school, and a female student is in mental distress. If a guy were to hug her to try to comfort her, it’s considered PDA. If a girl does the same thing, however, it goes mostly unnoticed. Sexism has been a major factor in American history and still is today. Although women are treated more equally today than they did in the past, we can still see some differences in the way men and women are looked upon as. With studies further looking into sexism and the way men and women are treated can help us end this “war”, that is if it ever will end. If you look in John Updike’s short story A&P, you can understand how people can envision the story as a sexist writing. In paragraph 13 Lengel comes out and says “Girls, this isn’t the beach.”…

The last portion of our in class discussions and readings in Phil 235 this semester have been on Sexism. I think it is extremely interesting and not only that, but important to talk about. It seems that today, more than ever, sexism is being brought up on almost a daily basis. Maybe it’s because I’m reaching that age where individuals can really start to think for themselves and see the problems in everyday society. Or maybe discussion on Sexism has been around since the beginning of time.…

Just like racism and homophobia, sexism will never completely disappear. Though sexism still lingers, as a society, Canada has never been more gender equal than it is now in present day. Unfortunately, there are still cases where specific genders are targeted for discrimination. The current percentage of women in the House of Commons is approximately 26% (Women in Politics). Clearly there is an under representation of the female population within the House, but should appointment of members be based on merit or on gender quota?…

These questions have undoubtedly been answered beforehand by the sexist system. Apart from struggling against the sexism that employers have been contaminated with, victims will struggle with being underestimated, teased, and even harassed by other employees. Sadly, questions about the performance of a certain employee will arise- not because of poor performance, but because of doubting ability because of that person’s gender. Even though workplace discrimination been outlawed, the bitter effects of…

As John Scalzi so rightfully said, “Ambient discrimination makes us discriminatory.” Although many people chose not to believe that they use ambient discrimination, Scalzi believes that this is built into our brains over time as we learn the ways our society functions. He uses four different levels of this discrimination to examine whether or not someone is being sexist, or being a sexist. Scalzi, wants to educate his blog readers about the “ambient discrimination” that is used without knowledge, so that they may be more aware of their exact actions and help correct them. The four classifications of discrimination Scalzi uses help to describe what he means when he discriminates between being sexist and being a sexist.…

Benevolent Sexism In the article, “The Problem When Sexism Just Sounds So Darn Friendly,” Melanie Tannenbaum explores how sexism is still prevalent in most societies today. Tannenbaum explains in the article what benevolent sexism is, why it is a problem, and how it affects society today. A discussion is necessary to analyze what the article is about, how one can relate to this article, if the arguments made in the article are agreeable, and if there is any bias present in the article. The article begins by explaining what benevolent sexism is; however, it should be noted that benevolent sexism is one of two categories under ambivalent sexism.…

Society expects certain behaviors from its citizens based on tradition and the predominantly represented demographics in places of power. In the U.S., white, cisgendered, wealthy men control the majority of the nation’s authorities and impose their beliefs on society. Those who differ from those beliefs are denied basic rights and are treated worse depending on the level of differentiation. As a white, upper-middle class American citizen, I am exempt from much of the oppression forced on those who do not fall into such categories. However, as a woman, I am subject to sexism in my everyday life.…

Society uses benevolent sexism to perceive that gender quality is fair. Words attributed to women consist of passive and supportive terms. Although these stereotypical words are not negative, they reinforce that women are not the dominating force in the gender system, not even at the conscious level (Lindsey 2010). The words used to describe each gender then get attached to certain level of achievement. By limiting men and women to these roles, interactions in daily activities, such as work and family life are already decided.…

At first when the professor mentioned in the beginning of the semester that we would have to write a paper highlighting our growth, I was skeptical with how much one could grow in a single semester. If anything I thought that one might grow but not significantly that it is so obvious. I was quite mistaken of course, and found myself reflecting on real growth. One that stands out to me is when I looked for a sexism article.…
