Sexism is the cause of the growing rates of femicide in Guatemala, which can be seen as men killing women to forcefully communicate their distaste for women’s growing independence and put women back in their subjugated place in the domestic cycle. The growing numbers of femicides in Guatemala is not only related to the violence of the civil war, but is a direct result of historical gendered violence, that the state and society condone through impunity. Many women in Guatemala have to deal with a man who hit them, scream at them, or even force them to have sex . According to Rebeca Lane, a feminist rapper in Guatemala City. "Most of us have to live violence in silence so when someone hits us or screams at us we just close our eyes and let go. We have to join other women and talk about it so we know this is not OK, this is not normal." Thi is so sad but at the same time it is the reality that women have to faced every day in that country. I think that some women find little bit of help by sharing their problems. For example, there is not sexism in my house, but one day my aunt told me one of her experience with her ex husband. She told me that her ex husband in several times punched her head, pulled her hair, smacked and kicked her. Also the day of their wedding, he made her wear long sleeves to hide the bruises, because she had a black and blue mark on her arm caused by him. Women are treated like if they weren't nothing, and the government doesn't do much to stop this. I lived 15 years in Guatemala, but luckily I never experienced this problem, I was little bit young to understand the meaning of sexism. Even though my parents were raised with sexism, they learned to respect and treat everybody equal. Otherwise, the only way to stop this problem, is to teach the little girls how to be independent and let them know they have a voice and courage just like men
