Chopin wrote this novel in a fairly formal prose that communicates a certain sense of mood to the story. The point of view of view that drives the tone is aggravated. Unlike most prose pieces, the third person point of view tends to be way more distant then the first person. The reader can notice a very pretentious tone. “He thought it very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, evinced so little interest in things which concerned him, and valued so little his conversation.” This pompous tone communicates the sense of downplay on women to the reader.
