Education is of no value to students if a weak curriculum and an adequate instruction is the foundation of a school. In order to achieve a school of higher-level learning students, it is imperative that an adequate curriculum is designed in which students are being challenged with academic rigor and receiving effective feedback from the teachers. The evolution of education has made teachers change the manner in which they instruct students, and teachers should use adequate and effective instructional methods that best help students learn. For many years, teachers utilized a lecture style of instruct the students, but with the innovation of technology and the evolving of our educational system in …show more content…
The using of various assessments such as paper test, quizzes, inquiry, and projects can be alternative methods for students to verbally, mentally, and physically display the knowledge they have learned in the classroom. Alternative methods of assessment should be designed and geared towards the strong points of each student in the classroom, and not designed only for those poor good verbally, mentally, or physically. State and Federal assessments such as standardized test has become a popular way of school districts making a determination of how well students are meeting state academic standards, and make a determination of which particular subject areas are excelling and the ones that need improvement. Promotion and Retention I believe that promotion and retention should be used as needed in the lower levels of education. Due to the 2002 “no child left behind act”, less schools retain students in the elementary school levels; instead more students that are lower achieving are pushed through grade levels. Promotion should be awarded to those students that have met goals, and have displayed mastery skills, thus allowing them to move on to the next grade level prepared. High levels of neither promotion nor retention should be warranted unless they are absolutely needed. Students should receive interventions that they are struggling during the school year, but they should be retained if those interventions are not successful. Retaining students can be like double-edged sword, on one and that students are retained their chances of dropping out of school increase, on the other edge not retaining a student and pushing
