Trafficking has been an occurrence in native communities (Sweet, 2015). One of the most recent speculations of human trafficking, goes back to the time when Christopher Columbus started his exploration of indigenous places (Sweet, 2015). It is presumed that every time his voyage led to an unfamiliar land, he would find native women, and allow his companions to use these defenseless women for sex (Sweet, 2015). Christopher Columbus played a role in the exploitation of indigenous women (Sweet, 2015). Although many people believe this is true, it has not been confirmed by any accurate sources (Sweet, 2015). Native females are often viewed as erotic, and television commercials and other consumer products often overly sexualize the image of Native American women (Sweet, 2015). The representation and fetishes established of native women often led to labeling their ethnicity as sexualized beings (Sweet, 2015). Image and labels give people the wrong idea of someone or something. The more someone contributed to the idealized form of something can ultimately lead to negative assumptions of an individual (Sweet, 2015). There are several predictive risk factors that can lead to sex trafficking (Sweet, 2015). Data shows that there is a large amount of Native American Children in foster care (Sweet, 2015). A total of thirty three percent live in poverty (Sweet, 2015). Females can be victims of sex trafficking within a reservation and also outside of the reservation (Hansen, 2012).
