Sex Trafficking Experience

An event that sparked a period of personal growth was my mission trip to Cambodia this past summer. I went on this trip feeling a little unprepared and completely out of place. This trip changed my perspective on myself and the world around me. The trip lasted for two weeks. I was instructed to disconnect from my life at home. I experienced a new culture for two weeks around new people who did not speak my language. I learned a lot about myself on this trip and I also learned a lot from the culture of Cambodia. The reason that I went to Cambodia was to help victims of sex trafficking. Cambodia’s main source of income is through sex trafficking. We went to a safe house where the girls who were affected by sex trafficking lived. It was very nerve wracking meeting the girls for the first time. I went on …show more content…
We went to a museum in Cambodia called the Genocide Museum. We learned about the pain that Cambodia suffered through many years ago. Cambodia was seized by the communist party known as the Khmer Rouge. They were taken over and thousands of Cambodians were kidnapped, tortured, and murdered. It really opened my eyes to how broken people’s souls are but how beautiful they can become. At the Genocide Museum I saw numerous Cambodian people on their knee praying and sobbing. The museum showed all the tools that the Khmer Rouge used to torture the Cambodians. I saw photos of victims, the prison cells they were kept in, and photos of the Khmer Rouge staff. An entire generation of Cambodia was wiped out. Families are still affected by this. The people I met in Cambodia were some of the nicest people I will ever know. They welcomed me in their homes, they prepared food for my group and I, and they did it all out of the kindness of their hearts. It was really humbling to see the people in Cambodia be joyous with what little they had. It reminded me to never take what I have for granted and that I am extremely

After attending the food bank for my ten hours, I learned quite a bit about the certain people who use the food bank and how the food bank operates to take care of a public health issue. I also learned a ton about the majority of people who actually work at the food bank and why it is important for them as well. As the name portrays, the food bank assists in providing food to people with low incomes. Many of these people are actually mentally disabled or physically disabled.…

During the Cambodian Genocide, there are so many people died because of the persecutions. “In a 1984 study of children and adolescent refugees arriving to the United States from Cambodia, psychiatrists David Kinzie and William Sack found that 46% had been separated from their parents for at least two years, 60% had been beaten or witnessed someone in their family being beaten, 63% had a parent killed (many of whom were forced to watch), 83% were malnourished, and 38% narrowly escaped being murdered.” Also, because of the genocide, there are a lot of Cambodian people escape to the country near Cambodia, but “With no knowledge of American culture or the English language, adjustment to their new life was tough. They were now minorities facing discrimination and poverty”. The actions of the Khmer Rouge still influence the Cambodian people until…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

I was meeting people who had gone through hell and back to make it here while I got here solely because of my parent’s hard work. These people helped me explore my compassionate side by telling me their stories of exactly what it took to come here. I grew incredibly thankful for the opportunity to meet and help these strangers and began making constant adjustments to my own life based on their story’s incite. For example, starting sophomore year I started missing the school bus to stay after school and then walked 2.5 miles home every day I needed to. If I had to baby sit that day, I would probably walk them to school with me and turn the trip into a Pokémon Go quest.…

At the end of my freshman year of highschool, I found myself looking for a change. I lived in a small town for most of my childhood, where I had very limited options for classes and had little exposure as an athlete. I decided to change schools to East Kentwood (EK) . I came from a school with about 800 kids who were all fairly similar to me, to attending one of the largest, most diverse schools in Michigan. I found myself far from my comfort zone however, EK changed me as a person, student and athlete.…
