We arrest bad guys and look good doing it Yes, they do. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American sitcom which revolves around a team of detectives and their newly appointed captain in the fictional 99th precinct of the New York Police Department in Brooklyn. The general setup of the show is a new case each week with a story building up in the background.…
It is truly distressing to find such a racist and stereotypical book in young adult literature, much less in school curriculum. Diversity is needed in our books, movies, and TV shows, but not all representations are healthy representations. It is up to our authors to research and completely understand the characters they write about. Racist novels like Eleanor and Park that promote stereotypical views of minorities are prime examples of no research. I hope that the movie based off of this book turns these characters into well-thought out and non-stereotypical characters that they deserve to…
I am writing to you today out of extreme concern to be honest, and with deep unease for the youth of this generation. In regard to your show, ‘South Park’ - I find that this show and its influence have an absolutely toxic effect on not only our children, but on everyone. I have sat down with my children and watched several episodes, so I do indeed know what I am talking about, and I am not simply relying on the opinions of others. South Park episodes are viewed in the millions, and its humor and ideas are spread worldwide.…
An action/crime series such as Narcos or Metastasis seemed to always be the easiest genre to attract both United States and Latin America. The attraction from the series comes from the action and thriller rather than the script and chemistry. However, in order to attract the Latino community with series that are comedy, romance or drama, the show needs to bring somewhat of a resemblance to a Telenovela and familiarity. Telenovelas are the reflection to what Latinos are currently interested in.…
This talented artist Bill Cosby is not just a comedian or actor but has a very sad story behind that smile he always wears. There is personal history in every one of his tales. Bill Cosby real name is William Henry. Bill Cosby was born on July 12, of the year 1937 in philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bill now is 78 years old.…
Is TV Too White? Most, if not all characters featured on television programs are white. On the off chance that there are Asians, Blacks, or Latinos, they all usually have one thing in common. Asians are depicted as quiet, sexless, geniuses.…
My first review will be on the hilarious and probably not very medically accurate sitcom Scrubs. The show ran nine glorious seasons (although some may say the last season was vastly sub-par) and survived cancellation at least once. That’s 182 episodes that made us laugh, cry and follow along with the addicting characters marriages, babies and promotions. Besides Grey’s Anatomy this is where I’m sure college students learned their basic medical knowledge. I also assume now whenever I’m in a hospital if every doctor has dated each other at one time or another.…
For example, a video from the popular YouTube artist, Hennessy Youngman’s Art Thoughtz, addresses “how to become a successful black artist, wryly suggesting black people’s anger is marketable. He advises black artists to cultivate ‘an angry nigger exterior’” (Rankine 23). This readily available advice is very demeaning, suggesting that black anger is profitable and it should be used for people’s monetary and popularity advantage. Although the video is very satirical in nature, stereotypical ideas of black anger prevail, living on consciously or subconsciously in the minds of all his viewers.…
It's 12:30 in the afternoon and I have just rolled out of bed. I made myself a veggie omelette with a side of turkey bacon and a cup of coffee. I make myself comfortable on my living room couch and turn on Netflix. As I sit there and contemplate about what to watch, I decide to take a trip to the 1970's and turn on "That '70s Show."…
Television programs throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s confronted race in the United States. African American’s had always been misrepresented on television, or if portrayed, the characters would embody racial stereotypes. Therefore, in the late 1960’s, African Americans began to receive more prominent roles in popular American television programs on big networks. This era was a major time for a change in race relations in the African American community in the media. The representation of African Americans throughout this era on television was notable and revolutionary in programs such as All in the Family, Julia and Room 222.…
Most of the T.V shows and movies are categorized by age ratings which obviously are indicating that minors are not allowed to watch it and fully discretion is needed. Not all people obeys to this and that's one of the major problems. Antonia Peacocke, the writer of the article “Family Guy and Freud: Jokes and Their Relation to Unconscious”, demonstrates in her writing that Family Guy has an untreated humor but is very captivating. The show can be controversial because there is actually people who like this type of humor. Like there are others that take this jokes to the heart because they feel its humor is very offensive.…
Samuel L. Jackson once said, “We’ve come a long way in our thinking, but also in our moral decay.” This quote holds true today as society stays rapidly changing and people become more and more desensitized to the horrors of the world. The line between right and wrong fades and turns to a larger gray area, and many things that happen in society today make us question how we, as a collective people, ended up where we are and how we acquired the customs we have today. Aldous Huxley, in his novel Brave New World, uses a great deal of satire and exaggeration to express his concerns for the society he was born into and bring attention to the problems of moral decay, drug dependency, and brainwashing, among other things, in the world.…
Stereotypes of people of color and minority races have been around for many years, and have proved themselves to dominate the perception of people of color in everyday life. Films portray people of color as they are perceived by white Americans, not how they truly are, unique. Film has only dirtied the minority races’ image over time, though if the movies were not made by other Americans, they were more accurate to their race. Stereotypes of Asians have been around for a long time, ever since Asians were introduced. Stereotypes such as Asian students are smarter, Asian women are more exotic and tend to wait on men, Asian women are submissive, Asian people are all from China, and many others.…
Satire Take it or Leave it As an art form, satire has existed since Antiquity. Several Greek playwrights wrote works mocking the conventions of their time. Quintilian famously said that satura, that is a satire in hexameter verses, was a literary genre of wholly Roman origin (satura tota nostra est) (Wikipedia). Satire has endured throughout western history as a form of cultural critique.…
Television can have long lasting and detrimental effects on children and young adults. While entertaining, watching T.V. can cause negative effects on physical and cognitive health, decreasing children’s amount of physical activity and sometimes impede brain development. Behaviorally, some television shows promote aggressive behavior in children and reinforce stereotypes. When looking into television shows to observe, I decided to select T.V. shows I had watched when I was a child.…
