Does sex semen in cattle lower the percentage of conception? The birth of a female calf in the dairy industry eventually leads to having another cow in the milking rotation. Which helps to increase milk production for years to come. A bull that is born are not as important and sold to a company for them to raise as beef. While in the beef industry heifer, calves are useful to replace cows in the herd but the bull calves are the ones that bring the most income in the end. In the case of sex-sorted semen, cattlemen are able to get the sex of the calf to their preference. When the technology of sex-sorted semen came out it came with the ability to change the entire cattle industry. Sex semen is a process of “sorting semen by sex” (1998, Feb) …show more content…
Temperature is one thing that could affect the percentage the most but all the cows conducted in the tests were in the same environment. They also used other motives to get the best results possible,
The scientists preselected cows that were synchronized for ovulation, that had a follicle size between 12 and 18 mm, and clear vaginal discharge at the time of AI were inseminated. A shallow uterine insemination was performed into the uterine horn ipsilateral to the side of probable impending ovulation. (Karakaya et al, 2014)
The outcome of this experiment shown in the graphs below.

As seen in table three, the percentages are broke down even more by primiparous and multiparous cows to gain results that are more accurate. The reason why is,
Heifers have a much smaller uterus than do mature cows. The smaller physical size of the tract allows a lower dose of sorted sperm to complete the journey from the body of the uterus to the sight of fertilization in the oviduct. The uterus of a mature cow is two to five times larger than that of a heifer, which makes a low dose insemination into the cow less efficient. (Stroud, 2006)

The outcome of the experiment from the graphs show that there is a difference between the sex-sorted semen and the conventional

Thirty newborn Montbeliard calves were allotted to 1 of 3 dietary groups according to age and body weight(BW) to determine the effects of different feeding patterns on growth and rumen development. Treatments consisted of pelleted starter(22% crude protein,26% neutral detergent fiber) fed alone(CON) or supplemented with alfafa hay from d 15 (PeA) or texturized starter(23% crude protein, 25% neutral detergent fiber) fed alone(Te). All calves were fed 4 L of colostrum within 1 h of birth and were subsequently fed milk twice daily until weaned on week 8. Rumen samples was taken in week 4,8 and 10 for female calves and in week 4 and 8 for male calves to determine rumen pH and volatile fatty acid concentrations. On d 56, bull calves were havested…

According to new advances in research the eggs go through a removal process in which then, “… they are mixed with sperm in a laboratory dish or test tube. (This is where the term “test tube baby” comes from) (Farina). Test tube babies are used during the process of in vitro fertilization. Currently in society today there are few procedures in which the egg is actually grown outside of a woman’s body, much like the processes in Brave New World. Scientist have discovered with continuous work that “In vitro fertilization is a procedure where the joining of egg and sperm takes place outside of the woman's body” (Farina), and also allows for the survival of the embryo itself.…

Sociological Approach of Female Genital Cutting Introduction to the Mutilation: As it stands in a massive list of cultural issues, female genital cutting (FGC), also misleadingly known as female circumcision, is a barbaric practice which occurs even to this day in different parts of the world. The term as per the description of the World Health Organization (WHO), refers to: “all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.” To be more specific, FGC involves the total or partial cutting away of the female external genital organs with razors, ceremonial knives, or blades under non-hygienic conditions without anesthesia, usually performed before the start of puberty such as between the ages of four and eight. However now, it is performed on infants who may be a couple days, weeks, or months old. It is identified that FGC contains four official types of the mutilation according to the WHO, beginning with the first, Type I, involving the full removal of the clitoris hood, with part or none of the clitoris.…

How Low Is Too Low? It is well known that high Somatic Cell Counts (SCC) within the herd is a reflection of high incidences of mastitis, but could low SCC have a similar effect? SCC is a measure of the cow’s immune response to mastitis causing pathogens. Some researchers believe that low SCC levels could indicate that the immune system is not functioning adequately to fight off infection.…

The mustang has long since been a symbol that Americans can relate to. A mustang symbolizes freedom, power, and a connection to the land all of which have been considered important to the American dream (De Steiguer, 2011). This being said, it also brings up one of the most controversial government land management problems year after year. Mustangs, by definition, are feral livestock that compete with other livestock grazing and contribute to land destruction (Gray et al., 2010). Thus, they are viewed from two opposite ends of a spectrum.…

The metabolic stress associated with mastitis causes cows to be anovular (not cyclic) for prolonged periods of time. Follicular growth is inhibited, preventing ovulation and the inflammation caused by mastitis produces hormones called prostaglandins that are involved with regulating the oestrus cycle. Hormone levels too high or too low at the wrong point in the cycle will prevent regular oestrus and ovulation. While a period of approximately 40 days after calving is normal and needed for the reproductive system to heal, extended periods begin incurring costs.…

Throughout society, all women have experienced unwanted sexual attention, which leaves them feeling uncomfortable and violated. Catcalls, a whistle, shout, or comment of the sexual nature usually directed at a woman, are a common method of conveying this attention. This method is considered a way for men to assert their sexual dominance over women, thus establishing society’s hierarchy. However, for my experiment I turned the unsolicited attention towards men by having a group of women comment on their physical attributes as they walked past.…
