In order to understand how to manipulate the sex ratio it is crucial to understand its composition. In 1979, China implemented the notorious ‘one child policy’ with the intent of reserving its dwindling resources (CBC News). However, when parents were faced with the dilemma of only having one child, they often favored a boy for work and financial purposes. If they had a daughter it was common to get an abortion, neglect her at birth, or give her up for adoption. Now China has lifted the one child policy, stating the skewed sex ratio has caused major problems with finding brides, and increased crime rates. Currently in the U.S., African Americans suffer from the most skewed sex ratios of any race in our country. It is possible that high incarceration rates mixed with low male life expectancy, leads to the skewed sex ratio for African Americans. The gap between men and women is formed in African Americans young adult life; at childbirth there are commonly more boys than girls. The lack of Black men in comparison to Black women is more common in the South, Midwest, and other large cities. It is vital to the success of African American’s to balance the sex ratio, so that more children can grow up with fathers and more women can raise kids with a husband. However, in order to increase men per women, large reform is needed inside the penal and medical areas of our country. We currently have the most people in prison than any other country; African American men compose a significant percentage of our incarceration rates. Perhaps the starkest description of the situation is this: More than one out of every six black men who today should be between 25 and 54 years old have disappeared from daily life (Wolfers 2). It will take time, effort, and even money from our country to create a more stable sex ratio among Blacks. However, it is an investment our country cannot afford to pass up. In order for America to thrive, we need to support those who may need help from time to time. It is time to reduce incarceration and homicide rates, and balance the sex ratio to create a more stable future for our
