There is not one person that can go in life without communicating, it is how people get to know each other and gather information. The power of communication is what makes things occur. In “Sex, Lies, and conversations” by Deborah Tannen, talks about how opposite genders respond to conversations, and how women are sensible and men are tougher. Tennan also describes how there is a distance between a marriage because of the lack of conversation,“‘When I come home from work I have nothing to say. If she didn 't keep the conversation going, we’d spend the whole evening in silence.”’ (Tannen 421). For over time communication has been a problem in relationships. The lack of communication in relationships has been seen as incongruence, interruptions, …show more content…
The partner may be trying to have a serious conversation or to get a point through. Now the most annoying part and rudeness is when the partner says something in the middle of a serious conversation. There has been researching on how men seem to interrupt women more than women do. In the research that was conducted out of 859 people, 67.8% of interruptions were performed by men, and 32.2% of interruptions were done by women ( Reeves). In a relationship, there should be certain boundaries that either partner should not cross while talking because it is disrespectful. There is a variety of interruptions in a relationship such as calls, meetings, cell phone usage, and even events that interrupt the day. These are ways that can easily mess up ones day with their partner, not only conversation. Researchers wanted to conduct a study to find how many times men and women interrupt one another, so they put a group of people in a meeting together. One of the ladies said she felt, “ disrespected.I have knowledge..”, women are more sensible to being interrupted (Reeves). This also can go vice versa, but in this level men and women communicate so …show more content…
This downplays the point of a date for relationships. A date is for a couple to spend their time with laughter, and endless conversations while having a great time. A report done by Pew research have found out that 25% of cell phone owners in a relationship have felt that their spouse or partner was distracted by their cell phone meanwhile they were together. Now 42 % of young adults between 18- 29 felt the same way (Lenhart). Now it seems to be more common in the younger generation because they are the ones being targeted with the new “ in” technology. Couples should put aside their cell phones while they are on dates, out of respect to their

Foremost, when my wife and I have conversations I am often very direct. I say what is on my mind, although perhaps I should not. As Tannen describes “… the conversational rituals common among men are designed to maintain the one-up position, or at least avoid appearing one-down” (154). This is true because I am always trying to one-up my wife. I attempt to find something that she has done wrong so that subconsciously I can feel better about my own wrongdoings.…

In the textbook Patterns for College Writing there is a passage titled “Sex, Lies, and conversation, and in it the author of the passage Deborah Tannen states that men and women have difficulties when having conversations, because men and women’s approach to a conversation differ drastically. believe that while she may be correct some of her ideas are more based in stereotypes than in reality when it comes to her statement that men and women are different when it comes to having a conversation. I will be using the show Rick and Morty to support my claim that Deborah Tannen is Partially correct in her belief that men and women have difficulty conversing due to how they interact with each other. One of Deborah Tannen’s arguments that men and women differ in conversation is that men and and women communicate differently in a relationship. In the passage Debora says ”Bonds between boys can be intense as girls’, but are based less on talking and more on doing things together” (424) This is seen in The relationship that Rick…

“For women…intimacy is the fabric of relationships, and talk is the thread from which it is woven” (Tannen 382). She describes what is important is not necessarily the individual subjects that are being discussed, but it’s more of a need to feel close to their husbands. “Since they don’t assume talk is the cement that binds a relationship, men don’t know what kind of talk women want, and they don’t miss it when it isn’t there” (382). Body language can often be misunderstood when related to communication. “I found at every age, the girls and women faced each other directly, their eyes anchored on each other’s faces” (Tannen 383).…

With any good relationship between two people, proper communication is the key to respecting one another and creating a solid structure for a long-lasting connection. Communication can make someone feel wanted, secure, and provide them with a sense of happiness in life. On the other hand, a lack of communication between individuals can cause a feeling of loneliness in someone and typically leads to the termination of a relationship. The issue of improper communication can be present with two females or two males, however, it most commonly exists between females and males. This likely happens because some males tend to engage interest in women for their looks, rather than their personalities.…

In "Sex, Lies, and Conversation; Why is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other," Deborah Tannen argues that the problems of men and women in marriage often stem from the fact that they misunderstand what the other person is really trying to say. Tannen notes that her own research concluded that women's most frequent complaint in marriage was that their husbands did not listen to them, but that when she examined actual conversations, she found that the problem was not that men don't listen, but that they listen differently (281). Leading Eleanor Maccoby to report the results of her own finding showing that children’s development is most influenced by the social structure of peer interaction (Tannen 282). Therefore, childhood experiences…

The article “Sex, Lies and Conversation” by Deborah Tannen illustrates several points about the differences and similarities between the conversational techniques of men and women of varying ages. In her article, she mentions how men and women have different expectations of what a conversationalist is supposed to do, one of them being that women “assume a conversationalist's job is to express agreement and support” (para 19) meanwhile men “see their conversational duty as pointing out the other side of an argument” (para 19). This can create unintended tension between both people, such can be seen in the book Deep Down Dark by Hector Tobar. Chapter four of the book is when hunger and desperation first begins to show itself within the 33 men.…
