How one speaks will measure one’s worth in society. Society views Tan’s mother negatively when she could not communicate clearly. Tan describes many events that show readers how her mother was not being respected for not speaking clear English. In a relationship, every couple has to adjust to one another; adjustments and compromising in a relationship are as important as communication. However adjusting and communicating is not everyone’s cup of tea. When I was in a relationship, I adjusted most of the time by going to watch romantic movies with my girlfriend or going shopping for the whole weekend. However, when it came to talking, I just could not bear it. I had to look at her when she was talking because she would get upset. I had to give immediate feedback, and I had to remember what she said, which was just too much. I felt I was her computer not a boyfriend who would remember everything. Some men like to listen, for example, my dad. My dad and my mom go every day for a walk, and they just talk and talk till they get home. However, I am not like my dad. Tannen says in “Sex, Lies, and Conversation” that “Some men really don’t like to listen, because being the listener makes them feel one-down, like a child listening to adults or an employee to a boss” (72). When I confronted my girlfriend that I don’t like to talk, she got mad and we had a huge fight. After the fight, we broke up. I felt like the men in Tannen’s quote, and my relationship with my girlfriend was not like a man and a woman but like a secretary and a boss.
