This idea is portrayed in the “dating manual” after his date arrives and he runs his hand through her hair, and, referring to himself in second person, remarks that, “[…] the only thing that runs easily through your hair is Africa… The white ones are the ones you want most… but usually the out-of-towners are black […],” (Diaz 2). In this example, one can see that the narrator believes it’s the easiest to have sexual encounters with black girls; this belief seems to have been made by a stereotype assuming that black people have a casual attitude toward sex but this is not true considering, in the end of the short story, Yunior fails to have any type of sexual interaction with any girl; this implies that his thoughts that certain ethnic groups have a certain attitude towards sex is incorrect because individuals vary from one another, hence everyone has a different attitude towards sex. The quote not only shows Yunior’s prejudice connection of race and sex, but that he’d rather have a certain girl over another another because of the superficial factor of race. This is a problem because Yunior is attracted to girls based, not on the girl’s personality, but the sex stereotypes of her ethnic group, illustrating that, for the narrator, sex doesn’t have a personal meaning.
