Introduction Talking to clients about sex and sexuality can be uncomfortable for both the client and the therapist. I never thought about having that conversation until I took this class. I think that it takes a lot of safety and joining so that the client will feel vulnerable to talk about sex and sexuality. As a therapist, I would like to know about my client’s experiences in all aspects of their life which includes sex and sexuality. For this sex history interview, I was able to learn what it looks like to actually have that conversation and how both the client and I as the therapist reacted to the process. I was able to see what type of questions surrounding sex and sexuality I felt I had a hard time asking. I was able to see areas about …show more content…
Sometimes children find themselves learning from sources that doesn’t always teach about sex in the way that is best. Some families are more opened to talking about sex than others and I am not sure why that is but it seems that it could be because their parents talked to them about sex as well. That was the case with AF. Her family talk to her about sex and now she is open about conversations about sex with her children. I have also learned how sexuality is affected by human development through puberty. I think that puberty is a big step and that there are so many questions that come from that time. I think that this around the time that people start become sexual and start trying to figure out how they feel about their changing body. I think that who you date also play a role in sexuality. If you take someone that is abusive, it came change your view of yourself and your sexuality. When I think about our class and how several students have talked about abuse and how that abuse has changed their outlook on relationships, sex, their view of their body and the many ways it has negatively impacted their …show more content…
I think sex and sexuality has been taught that it’s a taboo and that it shouldn’t be talked about. I believe that as a therapist if I shy away from talking about sex with my clients that all I am doing is copying what society has taught. I think that learning about client’s sex history is a must. Learning about if a client was abused can help figure out why a client is having issues in other parts of their life. A client’s sex history can show if there may be something wrong or may be if the client lack knowledge of sex. I think that all places that provide therapy should have some form of a sex history or

Human Sexuality- Fall 2015- Bruett Kelly Morrin Approach: 1, Source: Lerner, 2003 In a world where female genitalia is almost always mislabeled, there is a hero for the generations that is trying her best to reform society’s view and nomenclature of what is really going on “down there.” “‘V’ is for Vulva, Not Just Vagina,” is a wonderfully written article that grabs the reader’s attention with wit and offers insight about a topic that is not discussed all too frequently. Lerner did a fantastic job of addressing the fact that although men’s genitalia are more often than not labeled correctly, female genitalia does not have the same respect. The general term “vagina” has encompassed the entirety of the female genitals, but in fact it…

The clinical sexual history interview was particularly challenging because I chose to interview my husband of 17 years. Perhaps my own discomfort highlighted some of the cringe worthy moments during the 60 minute interview, including asking about the first time he had intercourse. The anxiety made me question if I truly wanted to know the answer to the sample intake questions. After all, I can still hear my grandmother’s voice a few minutes before my wedding telling me, “lo que no fue en tu ano no es tu dano/ what was not in your time is not your harm,” meaning I must not to worry or ponder about my husband’s previous relationships or sex partners.…

1.) I believe that Steinem‘s main message in her article If Men Could Menstruate is to show us that how we understand what is normal and acceptable about our bodies is very much culturally dictated. Steinem proposes that “the characteristics of the powerful, whatever they may be, are thought to be better than the characteristics of the powerless”(pg.209). Menstruating would no longer be connected to impurity or weakness if it were a male trait. It is only connected to these things because it is associated to the less powerful sex.…

Being a part of a Human Sexuality course has definitely opened my eyes to many different topics and issues that are occurring around the world. I believe I have lived a very sheltered life after learning about some of these topics, because I hadn’t even heard of most of them. I liked to think I knew all there was to know about human sexuality simply because I understood sexual intercourse, STI`s, and using protection. But human sexuality involves much more than those three things. Three of the major topics that have made me really think about how uneducated I was in regards to human sexuality were sexual birth defects, gender identity and gender roles, and sexual assault.…

Sexual Education has been encouraged to be a part of public school education since the late 1800’s. It is a program that is supposed to help young adolescents understand their body, promote abstinence, types of contraception, the risks of engaging in sexual activities, and how to prevent diseases or pregnancy. However, many parents fight this program because of their beliefs that teens should stay abstinent till marriage, and learning about sex will increase their urge to have sex. Depending on what the state requires to be taught and what a school district wants, a student will either receive one of the two styles of sexual education. The two styles are comprehensive and abstinence only.…
