“Don 't have sex, you will get pregnant and die!”, a well-known quote from the film comedy Mean Girls. While this quote is quite humorous, it is misleading and like many sex education courses provides an unclear message to adolescents. Young people are easily influenced by movies, and without a comprehensive sex education, they can make life changing mistakes. The way sex is massively shown in society today will not change; therefore, the form of sex education in schools must change. A comprehensive sex education teaches students complete, accurate, and age-appropriate sex education that helps them reduce their risk of HIV/AIDS, other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unintended pregnancy. The intent is that teens will know that the morally correct thing is to refrain from sexual intercourse until marriage. Abstinence only programs focus on only one set of values as morally correct for all students and often promote specific religious values. Teaching specific religious views and only explaining the bad that will happen if you have sex is no education at all, as this leads to teens unable to advocate for themselves. The students being taught this sex education may also partake in the virginity pledge, a pledge made publically to refrain from sex until marriage. Planned Parenthood speaks about a study that found the onset of sexual activity was delayed 18 months among pledgers; however, the study also found that those young people who took a pledge were one-third less likely than their non-pledging peers to use contraception when they did become sexually active (Planned parenthood, “Implementing”). Numbers are unimportant when the most at risk age for sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies is still on the rise; and that is due to uneducated decision …show more content…
Students are growing into young adults, they have a thorough education in math, reading and writing why should sex education be any different? Think about what your sex education growing up was like. Did it lack lots of important information? Did you learn what happened to your body during puberty, And did you feel comfortable like it was a completely natural thing everyone goes through? With a comprehensive sex education adolescents will learn age-appropriate ways to discuss sex as a natural action. Did you learn how sexually transmitted diseases occur, or how to reduce your risks of contracting them? Maybe you were shown disturbing pictures of sexually transmitted diseases? Watched an explicit birth video? This is a “scare” tactic, by no means does it teach safe sex education to adolescents. These are just some of the things my sex education lacked. I was not in grade school that long ago, a reference for you to see how this must be addressed now. My sex education class only consisted of healthy eating habits, resisting drugs, and why not to drink. Fortunately, I had parents who understood and were informed of the things they need to talk to me about, I received a comprehensive sex education from my parents, not at school.
