When people think of sex, they think of intercourse between a couple your age or younger? What does not come to mind is an old couple being erotic. Many folks do not want to think old people are still having sex after a certain age. Even so, many older people if they had a healthy sex drive while young, will continue to have a strong sexual drive as they get older. Sexual intercourse between an older couple may be less and less or stop over the years, but it may be due to multiple reasons. Couples, many without paying much attention to it think they have a sex life but it is another form of intimacy (such as touching, massaging, kissing, or holding hands) with their partner. Sex is a basic human need and it does not have an age limit. …show more content…
This cartoon shows a woman supporting a man’s penis in an erect position with a string and a man supporting a woman’s breast so it is not sagging with his hand. At one time in their relationship his penis worked and her breast was full and bouncy, but time takes a toll on the body. Time is something that cannot be stopped or beat, but people cannot let it beat them down. Older couples who develop issues that affect physical intimacy or who feel embarrassed about their body (sagging flesh, liver spots, or wrinkles) may be unwilling to discuss these changes with their partner or with their doctor. According to Kaplan and Berkman (2015) “Levels of sex hormones decrease, causing changes that make sexual intercourse uncomfortable or difficult.” for example, as she ages her vagina shortens and narrows, and for him impotence becomes more common. Although the recent creation of a drugs for male erectile dysfunction “little blue pill” which means that older men often get more medical attention than older women. As for women, since 1963 breast augmentation has been around to turn back the clock for women as they begin to see the effects of aging. Now when the public think of old people sex, their brain draws a blank because it does not want to go there not knowing sex is an enduring human need. It also passes under the radar because of the social stigma against older adults’ sexual activity while aging not knowing sex has a significant impact on their health. The goal of the media should be to changing the perceptions of the general public which movies now days are doing. This will not be just educating older adults or teenagers, but of old couples, letting them know its ok and about how sexuality changes through a lifetime. Even healthy older people may have dissimilar options on sexuality and think it is inappropriate after a certain age. Although older people have been sexually active for decades, many do not know sex education basics. They do not necessarily have complete and up-to-date information regarding STDs or other issues regarding sex, or they think that the information no longer applies to them due to their age.
