In the film, The Seventh Seal, by Ingmar Bergma, argues that death is the only truth that exists for all man's knowledge. Ingmar shows this through the character Antonius Block, The Squire Jon, and the actor Jof, as each shows a different perspective on their belief on life and what death is/ means to them. You will also find symbolism in the lighting and sound.
Through the knight you can see that faith can replace knowledge through some people and can not through others. One example may be the witch. When the knight asked her if she saw the devil she said yes but when she said that he could to if he looked into her eyes and he did not see him he then started to ask why she thought he would help her or save her from the pain and all she said was " I know he will... I know he will!". The knight believes that there is a God but in the beginning of the movie when he stopped in the middle of praying it showed that he was starting to doubt. Then through out the movie he questions people in a way that is showing he wants to believe but he can not with out the knowledge that God and

Jof is faith based instead of knowledge based, yet if someone explains something to him about faith he usually will ask them further questions about there perspective on it, as well as there own personal knowledge. Jof believes that there is a God and has visions through out the film. For him God is not necessarily silent because instead he send visions to speak to him. Life is all about being happy with his son and wife living freely and peacefully. They live life to the fullest they can and always try to be happy, kind and nice to others and most of all loving. He does not think that knowledge could replace faith. His faith would stay while knowledge would come like learning in school, he listens to what people think and say but he will also ask a lot of questions to learn more, while taking his only opinions

However, both characters have transgressions against established systems in society. The process of putting two disparate philosophers in dialogue with each other, in an attempt to reconcile their views, is an old philosophical tradition. Early Christians grappled with making platonic theory and catholic doctrine compatible. The great scholars of Bagdad worked to let Aristotle and the Quran stand side by side. While it may seem like such attempts are simply efforts to “have cake and eat it too”, there is much to be learned from evaluating a text in light of what may at first seem to be an opposing view. Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling and Nietzsche’s…

Through the book of Doubt Shanley is portraying three different erroneous ways people approach faith. Sister A’s faith is based on her experience in life, not God’s; Sister James’ faith is based on emotions instead of being based on God; Father Flynn’s faith is used as a tool for power. The centralized theme of the novel is the evil of mankind. In the novel, evil is an entity that can possess people against their will – like a spirit. Although that may sound like the run-of-the-mill Webster’s definition of evil, there is a difference, which is that in the novel, evil is personified. The novel uses its events to show how evil works in the real world, in a slightly mellow dramatic, but realistic way. Also, evil in this novel is known as Coyote, and this is because evil is being represented from the Native American point of view: “The thing is, Coyote keeps getting born, over and over,” said Bertha Moses.…

Death is inevitable, although fear and pleasures seem to be a temporary escape. The interpretations brought through the symbolism of the clock, masked figure, and Prince Prospero point to the overarching theme of the unavoidability of death. Reality surrounds them, as the tangible items are a reminder that they cannot escape fatality simply by hiding. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death,” the use of allegory, exemplified by symbolism, builds the theme by emphasizing the moral lesson that death is unavoidable.…

Through symbolism O’Connor presents the need of faith and also presents what can happen when death is about to take place. “One cannot deny that the concerns of this story are the basic concerns of Christian belief: faith, death, salvation.” (Bandy 1). O’Connor has a wide variety of symbolism throughout her work, however, not all of it is religious based, but it does have a significant meaning related to faith and death.
