On the last day of seventh grade, 4 of my friends and I decided to go out around town. We stopped at a diner and ordered a nice lunch. I then ordered a cheesecake to go, to bring home to my mother. We all agreed while we would split the cost of lunch, I would pay for my cheesecake separately.

The time came where we had to pay and leave. We got the bill and immediately put the money needed in the middle, dividing it equally among the 5 people. However, we still needed to tip. We had decided to split the tip, and we were happy to apply what we had learned in math about tip and tax. “Subtract the tax first” ran through our brains.

We brought out our technology, our cell phones, and we accessed calculators. We subtracted the price of the

Part B Diagnostic Interview and Tutoring Sessions Permission was granted (Appendix A) to interview and tutor Athena*, who is a 9 year old student in Year 4 who returned to Australia in the middle of Year 3, after living in the United States for 5 years. The Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) was conducted on a weekend afternoon at Athena’s home shortly after lunch (Australian Catholic University, 2011b). She did not seem to be nervous and was informed that the purpose of the questions was to help a pre-service teacher learn and develop some effective ways of teaching through the follow up tutoring sessions. Athena began the MAI confidently and could read, write (on the calculator) and order two digit numbers with ease.…

Personal Narrative rough draft : Car accident It was early in April of 2016, sunny and beautiful, the day was sure to be full of excitement and energy as student council speeches are due and the final trimester of the year was slowly coming to an end. I woke up that morning to my mother blissfully waking me up with my light turning on and her sweet beautiful voice saying “Wake up, Joey,” I slowly rolled out of bed and stumbled into the shower trying hopelessly to escape the morning and the horrible sensations of waking up early on a Wednesday. As the warm water rushed over me I rehearsed in my head how I would present my student council speech to my teacher. Little did I know how different it would actually be that day.…

I can recall the days of arriving at school just as the bell rung. Morning prayers started at 8:05 on the dot every day. A loud screech-voiced over the P.A system welcoming students to a brand new day of high school. I would always hurry to the back of class not trying to grab the attention of my teachers. But they would always single me out and tell me to go grab a pass.…

There is a certain type of dedication that a 13 year old girl has for a band full of cute boys that she wants to marry. The excitement only builds when the concert is announced, and finalized when a white t-shirt is decorated with the last name of the cutest member written on the back like a jersey. April 11th 2014, the date circled in the Glee Calendar was fast approaching; in fact, the story starts the very afternoon before the concert. Churchill P.E class, the least athletic but surprisingly competitive place, causes the initial hiccup. Ultimate Frisbee does not seem like a deadly game; however, in this case it almost was.…

“Don’t forget, the paper is due next Wednesday!” My 8th period teacher, Mrs. Oakford told to my class and I as we streamed out of the cramped classroom on a Friday. We couldn’t wait to bust out of the schools doors and claim our prize of a short freedom for surviving another busy, exhausting, and slow week of middle school. I rushed to my locker, grabbed everything I would need for the homework due Monday, threw it in my bag and headed down the hall collecting my friends to walk to town to start what I would hope would be a slow but fun weekend off The weekend went quicker than I wished and before I knew it, it was late Sunday night and I still hadn’t done my homework, I realized this and got to work.…

Prior to middle school, I thought I was satisfied with my position. I had friends, got along with my teachers, excelled in sports, and got decent grades in my classes. Back then, I thought this well-roundedness I sought between these necessities would offer me self-satisfaction. Little did I know, however, that I was going to confront this well-rounded nature of mine during my first awards ceremony in middle school. Among the most intelligent, artistic or athletic of the students present there, I was the one of the few who simply struggled to stand out.…

In the seventh grade, I faced a large transition in life. The previous year I had experienced middle school for the first time, but I would make that entrance again. I moved from Texas to North Dakota, where seventh grade was the first year of middle school. I took on those same fears and hopes that I had faced before, but in an unfamiliar place where I had no one except for family to give me support. I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

I was in middle-school when I first came but it was in high school that I truly grew to appreciate the wonderful community. My first year of high school was certainly unnerving, although I had previously attended an elementary and middle school that were more than double its size it still held an allure of suspense over what may soon come.…
