Seventh Grade Gary Soto Summary

In the story, “Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, the protagonist, Victor, faces a problem and doesn’t know what to do. The story is taken in a middle school. The conflict is that Victor, the protagonist, is trying to impress a girl named Teresa, but he doesn’t know how to. He was in homeroom and saw that Teresa was there too. After all his classes and lunch, he goes to French class, which Teresa is there as well. At the same time, he wanted to impress Teresa. As a result of this, he pretended to speak French to the teacher and he felt really embarrassed for doing that. After class, Teresa was actually impressed and asked Victor for help, so Victor, feeling determined, went to the library after his classes and took some French books so he can help Teresa. Victor goes through events that he has never faced before. He is a dynamic character because he grows from being awkward to daring to determined.

In the exposition of the story, Victor is introduced as being an awkward person. He doesn’t know what to say especially to the person he likes. One page 2, he went to talk to Teresa. He said, “Yeah, that’s me” and he regretted saying that. Due to that, he started thinking about why he just didn’t say, “Hi, Teresa” or “How was your summer?” or something else that is nice. Victor really wants to impress Teresa, so he does many things to see if she will actually be impressed. The events in the story help Victor learn to be confident with himself. He tries things like pretending to read a math book and acting like he knows French. There are many ways people could impress someone, but Victor chooses to pretend and lie to try and impress Teresa. The story is not yet finished because Teresa may find out that he was pretending to speak French just to impress her. This could create more problems for Victor, but who knows what will
