What do you know about masks? Look beyond the Halloween masks to see where this is going; facades and masked intentions. People mask their thoughts and feelings for many different reasons. Whether it being to hide the truth or to hide, masks have served many purposes throughout our lives. And yet, what happens when the mask is broken or revealed? What happens then? Masks, in general, are more harmful than beneficial.

Masks hurt more than they heal because they prevent the truth from being known. An example of this is found in the story Seventh Grade by Gary Soto. In this story, Victor, the main character, lied about knowing French to impress a girl that he liked. He tried to keep to make it seem like he did know french, but the truth is, he

Though this may not seem like such a big thing, the problem will quickly add up because not only will he have to catch up with other classes and have to learn french himself, but he also has to teach Teresa, his crush, what he knows, isn’t much. Add that all up and you have a very busy, stressful schedule. Furthermore, another example of how having a mask hides a truth is found in Cured by Bethany Wiggins. In this story, one of the important characters, Kevin, deceived both friend and foe; he led his crush and equal Jaccqui to think that he was a someone who was out to harm her and her friends Fiona and Bowen. At the same time, he led the antagonists, the raiders, to believe that he was on their side. In all actuality, however, while he was playing both sides, he was actually working to oppose the raiders, but because of his mask, he had almost killed Jaccqui. This means that by masking the truth about one’s identity, people run the risk of death to not only to that person, but to those that matter to the person. Because the truth was not exposed, another was put in harm’s way when it all could have been avoided if the facts were made clear instead of letting the disinformation spread and mess with another’s head. Some people might contradict this by saying

Perception is just one of the ways in which humans can attempt to understand all that we claim to know. Put simply, perception is defined as our entire understanding of things, including our opinions. The way we perceive our surroundings is swayed by several factors, including past experiences, common sense realism, bias, and even the context in which an event is to occur. Malcom Gladwell’s chapter concerning the Bronx shooting from his book Blink illustrates the idea that many factors - along with a common paradigm between the officers - can influence ones perception of reality.…

As a child, Gary Soto imagined that he would “marry Mexican poor, work Mexican hours, and in the end die a Mexican death, broke and in despair” (Soto, “Living Up The Street” 184). Although this may seem surprising coming from the renowned modern Chicano poet of “Saturday at the Canal”, it was the inevitable fate of many in his childhood community. Soto grew up in Fresno, California at the heart of San Joaquin Valley’s agricultural industry in the mid-20th century, where everyone in his family worked in a field or factory. He and his family were never able to envision a future unlike their present of near poverty and violence. As a Mexican-American, he was neither here nor there; he didn’t feel ties to either culture of his label.…

According to the Meriam- Webster Dictionary, a mask is, “something that serves to conceal or disguise” (“Mask”). A mask does not necessarily have to be a physical object, it could also be a façade that a person uses to protect themselves from being seen as vulnerable by others. “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Townie by Andre Dubus, are pieces of literature that depict the use of an intangible mask in two very different ways. In both pieces the narrators put up a front to hide their true selves, however the narrators use the front differently and eventually accept their masks in different ways. “We Wear the Mask,” written by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a realist poem about people pretending to be happy as a way to cover their true…

In “Against School,” John Gatto argues that the main purpose of public schools and the educational system in general is to produce a “manageable” populace. Gatto argues that the current educational system does this by slowly acclimating students into certain habits, confirming students to certain rules, and implementing a certain mindset into students that makes them respond well to authority. All of these things that Gatto argues adds up to make a system for training a complaint workforce. Firstly, schools achieve what Gatto states their purpose is by acclimating students to how factories are organized and what working in a factory is like. Secondary, schools also accomplish Gattos argument by restricting the class choices of students and…
