Seven Psychopaths
The film I watched at the Gish Theatre on Tuesday November 3rd with my entire recitation class with Alesa McGregor. The film Seven Psychopaths is written and directed by Oscar-winner Martin McDonagh. The comedy Seven Psychopaths follows a struggling screenwriter (Colin Farrell) who unintentionally becomes intertwined in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his friends (Christopher Walken and Sam Rockwell) kidnap a gangster's (Woody Harrelson) beloved Shih Tzu. At the Gish Screening before the film Daniel Fawcett spoke. When they turn their backs, a figure in a mask comes up behind them and shoots them both in the head. The figure throws two Jack of Diamonds cards on their dead bodies as a title card appears and reads "PSYCHOPATH NO. 1". This is the first instance where the audience sees how the film might progress with the psychopaths. The second psychopath is introduced when Marty is trying to come up with another psychopath for his film. He comes up with a story of a Quaker whose daughter is killed. The killer of the daughter feels guilty and turns himself in and asks for execution but is given a 27-year sentence. While the killer is in prison, he becomes religious, and over time he proves he has changed and he is released from prison early. After he is released however he becomes haunted by the Quaker man. He eventually goes insane and commits suicide. He dies by slitting his own throat as he watches the Quaker standing outside his window, but the Quaker takes out a razor of his own and slits his own throat as well. What is interesting about how the first to psychopaths are connected within the story is that the first psychopath continues to be a large part of the plot for the rest of the film. The second psychopath is merely an idea for the film Marty is writing inside the film “Seven Psychopaths”. The contrast between the two
