Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People

While often times our circumstances convince us otherwise, we are the architects, builders and designers of our destiny. With each act we commit, we sow a habit and with each habit, a character. In Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Covey argues against “personality ethic” and its’ cosmetic and manipulative attributes that allows the inhabitant to appear composed rather than actually being composed. In this seven series guide, Covey dismantles previous notions of “personality ethic” and shifts to achieving “character ethic” through integrating the core principles that maintain natural law. Ultimately, Covey alongside Dr. Magee’s presentation emphasizes that the only solution for change is recognizing and realigning your personal “paradigm,” …show more content…
Coincidentally even hundreds of years later, competition still has the ability to bring about the worst behavior in all of us. In habits 4, 5 and 6, the negative effects of valuing private victories over public victories comes to light. In these spaces, Covey brings forth these concepts to allow us to reevaluate and self-correct. The concepts include being mindful, receptive and open to what may seem to be uncomfortable communication. In focused listening, interpretative listening and interactive listening, instead of thinking of our reply when the person is speaking we allow ourselves to conceptualize and apply or instead of dismissing an idea that’s not yours as irrelevant, we find solutions to allow it to be applicable. When we are able to utilize these stages, we allow ourselves in these newfound teachings to be a participant instead of merely present. In doing so, the core training of Habits 4, 5 and 6 of understanding that another’s success does not mean the absence of your own, to see the plate both half empty and full and lastly, teamwork makes the dream work in synergizing is to complete the transcendence from being dependent to being happily …show more content…
Coinciding with Habit 7, the last stage of listening also focuses on the whole picture. In repairing and removing of the toxins within our conscience, through listening and the other aspects, we focus on the following realms. As we renew our physical dimension, we reinforce our personal vision. As we renew our spiritual dimension, we reinforce our personal leadership. As we renew our mental dimension, we reinforce our personal management and Habits 4, 5, and 6 gives us the foundation to practice in Habit 7, an interdependent reality. In each of these steps like in engaged listening we focus on our unseen focal cues, the unspoken meaning beyond what our conscience is able to articulate. Essentially, Covey’s purpose alongside the points made in the stages of listening was to gently accept our humanness but don’t allow yourself to be burdened by its’ shortcomings. As a communications professional, I found this chapter truly insightful, especially because Pink explains that we now spend a decent amount of time trying to move others by either persuading, convincing or influencing them so that we both get what we want. This concept covers everything from palpable products to intangible things as attention or effort. Have you ever caught yourself allowing your mind to become an excellent servant but a terrible master? The most valuable lesson that I have learned in my life thus far is the notion that the quality of life that I live is dependent upon the way that I choose to think. The individuals that we are and the individuals we aspire to be are hypothetically supposed to allign; for it is how we think that’ll determine whether or not the person you are now will be the person you aspire to be. Through the analysis of my past, present, and future I will analyze my passion for baseball as a child and how it contributed to how my masculinity was formed, I will analyze David Foster Wallace’s “This is Water” commencement speech and how it has contributed to…

Schnarch: Becoming a Self As I inquire about what it takes to become a satisfied woman, I am discovering satisfaction comes from within and it requires an individual to have a strong core self. From a developmental perspective, Dr. David Schnarch explores the process of the emerging self in his book Intimacy & Desire. He writes about the importance of developing a solid flexible self rather than relying on others to make you feel okay. He thinks the first emerged self was a “reflected sense of self” meaning a self that is reliant on feedback from others.…

Supershrinks, “A term coined by researcher David F. Ricks to describe a class of exceptional therapists/practitioners who stood head and shoulders above the rest” (Miller, 2007). This motivating article, listed in the 2007 edition, Psychotherapy Networker discusses the research that has been conducted in an attempted to deliver solid reasons why certain therapists/practitioners become known as “Supershrinks”. This article evoked at first a neutral response because of the way the article was written, it was long, a little “dry” and somewhat uninspiring; it was not until I read it the third time when parts of the articles started to grab my attention.…

The human brain is a fascinating yet complex notion to grasp for the majority of people. Only a handful of individuals have truly discovered the many intricate components of the mind; however, even they still have a long way to go before they can absorb the infinite miracles of the brain. It is for this reason that people fail to maximize their full potential while trying to learn new material, recall old information, or apply newly learned knowledge. In the University Lecture Series 2015, Dr. Robert Duke and Dr. Art Markman, cohosts for the radio show Two Guys On Your Head, inspect the fundamental ideologies behind learning and reflect upon the components of motivation that impact how people learn.…

The matter of truth and perception are two concepts in which the definition changes depending on the individual. In the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author Stephen R. Covey speaks of an experience at the Harvard business School where and instructor demonstrated how two people can have a different outlook, yet both be right. Two variations of the same picture were given to two sides of the classroom and asked what was seen, both sides had different answers. The students argued and neither side could come to an agreement that both arguments were correct; except for a few students who tried to see the alternate perspective.…
