Coincidentally even hundreds of years later, competition still has the ability to bring about the worst behavior in all of us. In habits 4, 5 and 6, the negative effects of valuing private victories over public victories comes to light. In these spaces, Covey brings forth these concepts to allow us to reevaluate and self-correct. The concepts include being mindful, receptive and open to what may seem to be uncomfortable communication. In focused listening, interpretative listening and interactive listening, instead of thinking of our reply when the person is speaking we allow ourselves to conceptualize and apply or instead of dismissing an idea that’s not yours as irrelevant, we find solutions to allow it to be applicable. When we are able to utilize these stages, we allow ourselves in these newfound teachings to be a participant instead of merely present. Coinciding with Habit 7, the last stage of listening also focuses on the whole picture. In repairing and removing of the toxins within our conscience, through listening and the other aspects, we focus on the following realms. As we renew our physical dimension, we reinforce our personal vision. As we renew our spiritual dimension, we reinforce our personal leadership. As we renew our mental dimension, we reinforce our personal management and Habits 4, 5, and 6 gives us the foundation to practice in Habit 7, an interdependent reality. In each of these steps like in engaged listening we focus on our unseen focal cues, the unspoken meaning beyond what our conscience is able to articulate. Essentially, Covey’s purpose alongside the points made in the stages of listening was to gently accept our humanness but don’t allow yourself to be burdened by its’ shortcomings.
