Lust - There’s Something I Want You To Do. Throughout this novel, Charles Baxter goes into detail on the Seven Deadly Sins through little stories. In these stories, we read about the examples these sins are used. The sin I chose was lust. Though the definition of lust is a strong sexual desire, it is represented in this book and the small stories. In this small book “Lust”, our main character that represents us, is Dennis. He is a good friend of Benny who has just broken up with his girlfriend. We start the book off with the two talking about the breakup and Dennis cheering him up. He tells him “the best part of breaking up with a girl and finding a new girl is that all y’our stories are fresh again.” Nan was Benny’s girlfriend. She explains …show more content…
After the breakup with Nan, Benny talks about the people in the bar with great detail. “The midsummer sun eased itself behind an office building, casting a conical shadow that pierced Benny with melancholy, while the bar slowly filled up with professional-managerial types getting off work in time for happy hour, the men loosening their collars, the women quickly, almost surreptitiously, checking their faces in the mahogany-framed mirror above the bar. To the side, a couple of outcast full-figured ladies slimming dresses leaned toward each other in the corner, whispering. The stars wheeled in the empty space of Benny’s Desolation. He would tell Dennis about the wheeling stars. Dennis would be amused.” (Baxter 137) This quote I think shows that Benny was thinking about Dennis and telling him the details of the bar that night. I also think this is where more lust is shown. The people in the bar are described in detail which makes be believe that Benny has that desire in him. Another example of lust in this chapter is when they talk about Benny sharing his stories from the “battlefield”. “Benny’s idea is that he’s keeping his friend alive by sending out stories from the battlefield. Before he got sick, Dennis was a real player. In any particular room, if Dennis hadn’t made a pass at an attractive woman, it was just an oversight. He had coached Benny in the complicated norms of seduction, separation and betrayal.” (Baxter 141) Lust

The 7 deadly sins come from religion and are known to be wickedest wrongdoings that can be done by humans here on earth. In Thomas H. Benton article, “The 7 Deadly Sins of Students”, he makes his argument by using the sins to say what students do wrong while also stating teachers aren’t so innocent. The two arguments that he makes in the passage from what I saw was the explanation of sins students do and how the educational system should take some notes from the liberal arts schools. The authors credentials are what really most people tend to pay close attention.…
