Settings In J. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit

J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit has various settings throughout the novel, often taking place in the fantasy world of Middle Earth during the Third Age, which many believe the author based off of Britain in the Middle Ages. Bilbo Baggins, along with a rather colossal group of dwarves wanting to reclaim their gold from the dragon Smaug, travel through: Bags End, the Lone-Lands, Rivendell, the Misty Mountains, Mirkwood, and the Lonely Mountain. This audacious novel begins with the venturesome Bilbo Baggins, who lives in Bags End, across from the river and a peaceful countryside, as a brigand. They eventually reach the border of danger and peace, Rivendell, where a friend of Gandalf, Elrond, coincides. Here, there are friendly elves with fruitful songs and much laugher in the household lead by Elrond. Beyond this land lies the impregnable and sadistic Misty Mountains, which threaten anyone who may pass through; though, it is not just mountains, as it is sometimes the battleground for giants and other creatures and the home of the perfidious goblins. The Eagle King, another of Gandolf’s many allies, also resides here. It is in this land that the goblins, along with the wargs, attack Bilbo Baggins and his colossal group. Also, there is Mirkwood, the horrendous forest, where there is no safety present, as it is filled with magical elves and spiders that trap the travellers. In this forest, there lies the necromancer, a treacherous enemy, in which Gandalf, the wizard, must defeat. The Lonely Mountain is the end of the dwarves' quest. The primary characteristic of this setting is that it's incredibly hard to get inside. The dwarves have to wait until precisely the right day before they can unlock the side door and get
