Setting In Volleyball

I remember trying to learn how to set a volleyball. Setting is actually very difficult. To be a setter, it takes a lot of work, starting with simple things like catch and release drills. In a game, the setter is a very important player. Most of the time, hitters receive the star attention and all the credit, but they can’t do all the work by themselves, which is where the defensive specialists, liberos, and setters come in. Without a good set, the hitter can do nothing. Even before that, there must be a good pass. A sloppy pass leads to a sloppy set, which then leads to a sloppy hit, and when that happens, it never ends well, and the passers and setters get all the grumble. I personally love setting; it is hard not to like it when you are almost guaranteed to touch the ball every point. To keep my position as a setter, I had to do a lot of extra work.
In 5th grade, I remember the tryouts for the Illini Elite, which is a club volleyball group. Alexis Charlton and I were partners at a setting drill. We were terribly bad, and the coach helping us just kind of shook his head at us. We thought it was absolutely hilarious. We decided that was the coach we hoped to have. We wanted to make the same team, and we wanted him to be our coach. That is actually what ended up happening! We were so excited. Another time, I was practicing setting at Illini Elite. We were in a group doing work on our setting. The coach would toss us a ball, and we had to set it. I was so frustrated with myself. I could not set the ball well. The sets were spinning all over the place, and my hand work was not anything close to what it was supposed to be. None of my sets would have worked for a hitter. Then, I went to set the ball, and it fell through my hands and landed on my face with a plop. I was a little embarrassed. I just wanted to move on and be done with the drill. All the tears of frustration and face-flushing embarrassment lead me to be a setter, which I completely love! Being a setter and working on setting has given me so many great memories. All the memories I have of my setting work will make me laugh someday. I am just so passionate about volleyball, and I enjoy every second of
