Serving As Theta Iota Summary

Serving as Theta Iota Chapter President sharpened my leadership skills and taught me to engage those around me through positive encouragement. Before my term I assumed that projects always go as intended—volunteers are on time, organizations are cooperative, and ideas flow smoothly into reality. While this is ideal, the actuality is that difficulty can arise at any moment and people often need support.

During our Chapter’s annual “Day of Service,” we organized over 100 volunteers to engage with Tucson non-profits throughout a single day. Unfortunately, the event started poorly: the member bringing breakfast suffered from a flat tire, the microphone shorted, and one of the non-profits had to cancel their event. Having the opportunity to feel as though you’ve truly made a positive impact on the lives of others is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, and this was exactly what I was seeking when I signed up for an eight day community service trip to Puerto Rico. What I ended up receiving, however, was far more enriching, humbling, and life-altering than I had originally expected. Our main task was to make batches of cement for houses a day in the community of Villa del Rillo. Lots of Puerto Rican houses, mostly in the poorer areas, still haven’t recovered from the effects of Hurricane Hugo, which hit the island almost three decades ago. Difficult manual labor directly under the oppressive heat for hours every day left us sore, dirty, and tired, but gratified.…

Early this year, my grandmother became very ill and required around the clock attention. My family and I wanted to make sure she was taken care of physically, but we also wanted to make sure her meals were healthy and nutritious. Through word of mouth, I heard about the Meals on Wheels program that just happened to be in my county. I contacted the site manager and the next day, the agency started to deliver meals to my grandmother’s home. We were so grateful because we could concentrate on other things besides cooking.…

While most people believe that non-profit are doing great public work, these organizations are often contributing to the increase of elitism and capitalist forms through corporate influence. Non-profit industrial complex (NPIC) is as a “set of symbolic relationships that link political and financial technologies of state and owning class control with surveillance over public political ideology, including and especially emergent progressive and leftist social movement” (Smith 8). This simply means that NPIC offers a space where corporations can control and authorize social justice movements through their financial support. It permits public monies to fall in the control of private corporation through foundations. The nonprofit industrial complex…

Local and National Outreach Although they identified as a national organization, the NLHO and its founders always made sure to maintain their primary focus within the community from which they lived in, especially when it came to educating and empowering young women and girls. For our civic engagement project for the Redefining Leadership class, my group, Stephanie, Hailee, Christina, and I, decided to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in New Haven, Connecticut on a Thursday. Before we got there, we did not know what to expect, but afterwards, we truly felt grateful that we helped out a great cause. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity house that keeps families close to their family members that are being treated at a nearby hospital. We spoke with someone who works at the House and she told us that eight families were there on that day. We were able to see some people and did what we could to help out.…

At the beginning of the semester while at my field placement, I noticed several staff members who appeared burnt out. Since that time, I set a personal goal to aim to lift the spirits of the staff members within the agency. I decorated the bulletin boards around the office giving the staff positive messages to view throughout their day. I also secretly left positive quote cards on their desks in efforts to further build morale around the office. While visiting the offices of the staff members, I have noticed the cards displayed on filing cabinets and taped to desk.…

The role of nonprofits has developed over the years, comprising a vital and growing sector of the nation’s economy and society. Due to their assumed roles, “nonprofits essentially fill the gaps left by market failure and government failure by providing the goods and services that the other two sectors can not” (Worth, 2009, p. 50). In an attempt to ensure the longevity of much needed services, many nonprofits started endowments. While many argue that this is provides an economical advantage, others see this as unjust.…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
