Services Learning Summary I did my volunteering at my job Cedar Wood at Sandy. I work in the kitchen, but I volunteered with the activity director. The first day I helped with games and helped with a farewell event. My work used to be owned by Atria but not Cedar Wood owns the building that we are in. I learned this day that doing activities were easy and fun. I already worked with the residents but this got me to build a stronger friendship with them. Through this whole process I mainly did the same thing every time I went. There were a few times I helped with office work. The office work I did help with was cutting papers and putting things back in closets also setting things up for holidays. One thing about the activists’ people is you don’t have to get something done in a certain time frame. Get it done when you have time to do so. I learned a lot about the residents, all of them were so nice to me, and most of them couldn’t recognize me because my hair was down. They were not used to it, and I wasn’t used to be much closer to them. I had a chance to see what they did every Thursday from one to four. I got to hang out with them and even play the games with them. It was very fun and I don’t regret doing it. After doing this the residents know me a lot better, and they say that they miss …show more content…
I was able to connect with them. After talking about the problems with elderly I could understand some of their struggles, and how they must feel. I love to talk to the residents and get to know them better. I believe that the activity’s provided for the residents are a way for them to keep their sanity. If there in their rooms constantly and not being social it can cause depression and loneliness. I think the only negative thing about this is I got more connected to the residents so if they move out or pass it will be harder for me to handle then it would

I loved the variety of work that the group was able to do over the week. I felt like it was all useful and needed work as the ministry had had a harsh winter and this hopefully gave a new life for the start of spring there. I also enjoyed working with those from Tree of Life and also from my group. We were able to have fun and keep a positive mindset during the week while we were working. I think part of this is due to the reason why we were working and how we were trying to show the love of Jesus.…

Looking at my past experiences I couldn’t begin to understand how I could write an entire paper on what I’ve done. I soon realized as I dug deeper into the assignment that what I thought were meaningless events, ended up being major components of my life that helped shape me as an individual. One experience that was formative to me as a child was when my grandmother moved in with my family. She taught me the value of education and just how big of an impact it had on my own life as I grew up. She firmly believed that reading and writing specifically correlated to the success of any student.…

Both experiences have affected me because it has changed the way I see the world around me and given me new insight on what is going on in my own community. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of the issues occurring around me, but after going to these events and listening to the class lecture, I have found there is a lot for me to learn from to have a greater understanding of what is going on around me. Because of this Service-L Learning course, I learned I need to be open-minded about the impact individuals, such as myself, have on the community, so I can better help the individuals in my community. This experience was different than what I expected because I expected to be volunteering at one certain area for the whole 20 hours. I did not expect to take part of what the community events, but I am glad I did because it has opened…
