Service Trip Reflection

I had never had much responsibly thrown my way, I was typically the one in group projects who took the back seat, who just did what others told me to do, But at the beginning of my junior year my whole school was about to embark on a service trip, I was going to treat it like I had the year before, let my fellow students take the lead and I’ll just help out. I ended up taking the lead of my group and for the first time learning about what it means to be a leader. Before the trip there was a lot of preparation, we where going to visit and teach at a school 2 hours away in Shanghai. Our large group split into 4 teams, I was in Art group. Our goal was to help the kids learn English through art. Our group did not have a leader in the beginning, but there was a lot we needed to do before we went on our trip, such as plan our lessons and get the art supplies we needed. My whole group was a bit confused none of us really knew how to plan a lesson. Finally I decided to write up a lesson plan, we were going to be teaching the kids how to make paper machine maracas. I came up with a list of all the materials and a list of English words that we would teach the students. As the head of the group I designated the positions in our group before we left, one person was to translate if any kids had trouble understanding, others would hand out materials, and I would teach. When we finally arrive to the middle school on an overcast day the kids seemed a bit scared but also excited to see us, I was also a bit scared. I wanted my hard work and planning to all work out, and I also wanted to walk away knowing I taught …show more content…
I no longer shake and stutter when I am giving a presentation in class, I speak with confidence. In groups I want to take a leadership role rather then step back, and I like sharing my ideas. Stepping up and taking that role helped me learn skills that will stick with

Girl Scouts was a big part of my life when I was young and it really helped prepare me for the future in some ways. I learned a lot about responsibility during our famous cookie sales. When we did our booth sales I got a lot of practice trying to make good sales. I was often told that I would make a great saleswoman which is a great skill to have when looking for a job. The camping trips helped me learn a little more about independence, responsibility, and respect.…

The informative speech I gave on Wednesday about “GM Foods” did not go better than I expected that I could have done because I felt time pressure to organize a verbal outline as closer to written outline. On the topic “GM Foods”, my rhetoric was mainly to inform audiences about negative impact of GM foods on human health. The most difficult part of this informative speech for me is the topic selection. Going through the struggle of finding the topic of large public/audiences interest which can lead to audience inclusion and positive public discourse, I finally found the topic of public concerns/interest but doing research on the topic found all controversial proposition and opposition to the arguments of positive and negative impacts of GM…

This personal narrative is going to be about the first day of Middle School and my experiences as a 6th grader. It is going to go after my emotions and other descriptive details of the first day. I still remember how the seat belt felt tightening across my chest as the car got closer to the Middle School. During that time I knew nothing about being in a big school because the biggest school i've been in was yankee ridge. (Which is really small).…

All the blood my heart was pumping it was going directly my ears and during that moment, I did not know what to expect and all I could think was about how to make it through this day. I never asked for any of this. I left friends and my family behind to start a new life, an opportunity for education that I did not have in my hometown of Bani in the Dominican Republic. I was still in shock, preparing myself mentally while my sister put her coat on before getting on the bus. When we arrived in William H. Ohrenberger Elementary, we were introduced to the principal and my first thought was: “Oh my god, my nightmare will start at this moment”.…

Service and Leadership Service and leadership! Even though they are two different things they both do correlate well with each other. For example, most of the time when you lead you are serving others whether it be big or small you still are offering some type of service. Throughout my life I have faced many challenges and have overcome so many different barriers with the tools I’ve learned growing up. One of them was how to serve and lead, not only serve myself but to serve others.…

In high school my most outstanding example of a time when I set an example as a student leader was my sophomore year in high school. My sophomore year of high school I was brought up to the varsity soccer team, the team that I was on was not extremely hard working and or dedicated. As a sophomore I was afraid to stand up and verbally tell the entire team that we need to step it up, or we are going to have a horrible season, so I decided to make my statement apparent by my actions. First, I started by always being the first one to every practice, putting pressure on my other teammates to do the same, in result everyone started to arrive to practice earlier. The second step I took was difficult since I was one of the youngest players and the…

Gunshots woke me up. What seemed to be an enlightening day, turned out quite the opposite. Just the day before, our burglar alarm's siren echoed throughout the house at 4 a.m. My dad rushed downstairs to determine if our house had been broken into; the back door was slightly open, but nobody else was in the house. Surprisingly, on the next day, my neighbor's house had been hit with a multitude of bullets around midnight.…

Areas that I feel like I have improved in during this communications 101 course is becoming more confident in speaking in front of a small crowd, learning how to write speeches, and learning how to research and prepare for speeches. Everyone 's fear is public speaking. I avoided taking this class for the longest time just because I did not want to have to take a class where its entirety was just about speaking in front of people and doing a handful of speeches being my primary grade. I needed to take this class for when I transfer over to Arizona State University in the fall of 2017 so getting this class out of the way now at the University of Nevada was more of an ideal plan rather than taking it at ASU. This class is a core pre-requisite…

Post Trip Reflection Paper I signed up early in the summer for the six day long Odyssey 38 Adventure WV. I heard about it through a friend who highly enjoyed their trip. There were 18 students and 4 leaders on my trip. We could only pack a certain amount of items to fit into an 18-gallon tub and I proudly fit all my gear. The whole week felt rustic due to the fact that there was limited toiletries, food was simple, and we slept in tents for a few nights.…

I make an effort to help others transcend their own expectations, especially those who lack confidence. I enjoyed informing myself on future class subjects so I could know how to carry out experiments and projects the next day. Constantly showing my intelligence and social skills, I gained admiration and gave people the confidence to ask me for help. My leadership skills were also recognized at Eden Hospital.…
