Service Reflection

This whole semester, I have done service in a few different locations, including The Lord’s Pantry at Anna’s House, Indianapolis Care and Control, St. Elizabeth’s Home, and Plainfield High School. Despite these different service experiences, the one in which I felt the most moving and most changing, was all three times that I went to Indianapolis Care and Control. The first time I went to Indianapolis Care and Control, I had to get training to be in the Four Paws Club, so we had to go there to get the guidance on how to walk the dogs and hold the cats and everything. During that experience we had to go through a lecture about the kinds of dogs, and how the cats cannot go on the floor, and not to hold the 6 month old and younger puppies. Then,

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

350 word limits Essay Question - Other than your Eagle Scout leadership service project, what service have you provided to your community during your high school years? During my high school years, I have primarily provided service through my participation in the Christiana Care VolunTeen program and through the various clubs that I lead. The Christiana Care VolunTeen program allows young adults to help serve at the hospital in various areas, often exposing teenagers to how a hospital operates. Specifically, I worked in the Outpatient Pharmacy, SurgiCenter, and Pathology/Histology Lab, assisting patients and doctors with their various needs and tasks.…

Roll Over U is a dog training agency owned by Cindy Peters. I originally stumbled upon Roll Over U (ROU) while I was looking for a job at a dog boarding facility. So I drove down highway 18 to get her small facility and walked in with a resume in hand. She wasn’t hiring as she didn’t have the means to hire anyone, but she did offer to let me watch her training class that weekend. That Saturday I headed back to ROU for three hours of classes that morning, but the first one of the morning was a private class with one client.…

I have had various experiences in the last two years, but the one I feel is the most significant is the time I spent volunteering for the Detroit Mission Trip. This opportunity presented itself in June of 2014 through my church, Metro South Church. I spent one week, Monday through Friday, each day-all day, commuting from my home in Brownstown to the inner city of Detroit. Each day of this mission trip consisted of various volunteer jobs. I was one of approximately 100 people that engaged in the process of making life better for others.…

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

Service is something that is near and dear to my heart, and this trip was no exception. My FYS group and I went to a local non for profit Atlas (Attaining Truth, Love, And Self-control) to do projects they needed done. This organization works with troubled people who need a mentor or a shoulder to lean on. Because they are a non for profit and are very busy, the people on pay roll didn’t have the time to do yard work or extra jobs around the building.…

Berk offered me a staff position with Grace Community Church of Cary. After much prayer and consideration. I gladly accepted the position and started the necessary steps to make it official.…

Introduction For my service learning experience, I decided to continue my long-term volunteer position at Palmetto Place Children’s shelter. I also participated in the Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence. With Palmetto Place being on the micro level, and the walk being on the macro level, I was able to broaden my experience level. Through volunteering at Palmetto Place, I was able to expand my cultural competence for children in foster care, practice skills such as empathetic responding, connect my experience to the NASW Code of Ethics, and contribute to the mission statement of the organization.…
