Service Project Reflection

This summer I attended Appalachia Service Project, and it taught me many life lessons. Appalachia Service Project is a mission trip that serves the Appalachia region. This trip taught me that you need to be grateful for what you have, that there are so many people that care about me and that one small action can change a person’s whole life. The trip taught me more than I ever imagined it would have.
While on Appalachia Service Project, we would service the people in need. These people were living in homes that were crooked and falling down. Compared to their life, my life was perfect. The trip made me realize that I had everything I needed, and my wants were not as severe as I originally thought they were. Some of the families that we served couldn't even put food on the table, and at home it's unimaginable skipping a meal. The people we served, taught me so much about how lucky I am to have a roof over my head and

To learn these things you must put yourself out there and I had to take a step out of my comfort zone to be able to make me a better-rounded person. These lessons are not ones you can study before you have a test. With these, I was placed in a situation and I learn after the situation was resolved.
The hardest obstacle I had to overcome was definitely how I had to change my way of life for a whole week. To learn what I did I had to give up sleeping in a comfortable space, my cell phone, and most importantly I couldn’t rely on my parents for anything because they were not there. This especially taught me how lucky I was because my parents do so much to support me that I don’t realize on a typical day.
At the conclusion of Appalachia Service Project, when I got home and reflected on what I learned I noticed that I learned so much that was disguised as something else. The lessons I learned, meant so much to me that it was a teaching of a life

Being a member of the Appalachia Volunteers of Boston College has been one of my most defining experiences in the past 2 and a half years. The Appalachia Volunteers Program is a yearlong program than includes weekly Sunday night meetings based on the program’s mission “to love, learn, and serve” and culminates in a weeklong service trips to the Appalachian region and beyond. Through both the meetings and my experiences on these service trips I have gained new perspectives and learned more about myself than I had ever thought possible and I will be forever grateful for that. Love is all around. The Appalachia Volunteers Program introduced me to the concept of agape, and showed me this unconditional, selfless love first hand.…

Everyone has an experience that has had a huge impact on their life. Mine happens to be Buckeye Girls State which prompted my transition into a strong, confident, and ambitious young woman. At the beginning of Girls State, I was told the week would be life-changing, and I was skeptical. It was only a week long, how much impact could the program have? However, by the end of the week I was completely wrong.…

As a service learner, it is my goal to better myself, assess and improve my social awareness and responsibility (especially involving social justice), and to do something that is meaningful to me. I wish to improve lives and people’s days, even if it is something incredibly minimal like making a child smile by coloring a picture for them. I want to feel invested in my community. It is these reasons which lead me to choose working with the America Learns after school program at the Tobin K-8 School. There are opportunities and instances every day when I feel like I have made an impact in a student’s life.…

Throughout high school, I have learned numerous lessons, ranging from the significance of honoring my heritage to the importance caring for others. Yet, these lessons are not ideas that can be simply taught, instead, through work and experience, I have come to discover how remarkable they truly are. One of the most pivotal catalysts in this age of personal growth and discovery was my experience with community service. Volunteering with the Lewiston Auburn Greek Festival exposed me to the unique energy and vitality that lives within culture and heritage.…

Over my time at spring island I learned many things and these things will help me in every aspect of my life. The three most important lessons I learned were: everything is connected, The environment should be cherished, and that all things are good for something. Everything is connected was a saying used by the kyuquot people and I believe that it can be used a lot in life, in wildlife if we catch fish that will affect the predators of those fish and the chain keeps on going also in life if you treat someone well or poorly that might affect how they treat you in the future. Nature was beautiful in BC, it was amazing to see the old growth forest and that that was one of the few ones in the world meaning most forests are man-made. The natives of kyuquot use all things and don’t waste anything like when they make or find food, shelter, and transportation.…

When asked to be a participant of Student Service Learning I was very excited. I realized that I could help my community through my most familiar environment, school. After researching what it means to serve as a student there came a greater meaning to what I would be participating in. I want to base my service off of Maryland’s Seven Best Practices of Service Learning; and so far I think I have. Working in a classroom is much different than I thought it would be.…

Project Citizen has been something I've heard about and have not been looking forward to for a couple years. This project is one of the many graduation requirements needed to receive my high school diploma, and also serves as a capstone of the 12 years of social studies. During project citizen students like me are able to address a problem in society by coming up with alternative policies and finding a possible way to solve it by going through different levels of government. The group I was apart of decided to tackle the problem of AP students not having the opportunity to receive the help they need to succeed, during the process of finding solutions and ways to put them into place I learned about what I can do as a citizen to change our public policy. As we decided what issue to address, our group looked for ways we could benefit the school we attend.…

When reflecting on my experience through service learning I realized you can never predict the future and what outcomes you will acquire. Planning the future does not always mean the future will work out that way and this experience taught me that. The things that do happen tend to happen for a reason as well. The Fulton preschoolers surprised me with their knowledge and abilities throughout this experience. “Sit down and be quite” was one of the articles I choose to relate to the reflection of my experience.…

I arrived at The Public Health Department on Monday at eight o’clock in the morning, on the fifth of February. On the verge of completing day two of my Service Learning Project, I felt myself becoming anxious about what I would be allocated to do, together with eagerness on assisting in educating the young children of the Oologah/Talala School District about hand washing. I experienced uncertainty of what would be expected of me, nevertheless, I believed to be prepared to lend a hand to the nurses of The Public Health Department in any way possible. I ventured into my supervisor, Kathy’s office. She glanced up and exclaimed, “Good morning Naomi.”…

This whole semester, I have done service in a few different locations, including The Lord’s Pantry at Anna’s House, Indianapolis Care and Control, St. Elizabeth’s Home, and Plainfield High School. Despite these different service experiences, the one in which I felt the most moving and most changing, was all three times that I went to Indianapolis Care and Control. The first time I went to Indianapolis Care and Control, I had to get training to be in the Four Paws Club, so we had to go there to get the guidance on how to walk the dogs and hold the cats and everything. During that experience we had to go through a lecture about the kinds of dogs, and how the cats cannot go on the floor, and not to hold the 6 month old and younger puppies. Then,…

The biggest challenge I have ever had to overcome was my childhood fatness. I grew up like a normal kid, and in fact, I was skinny. As a kid, I felt in heaven watching tv and eating junk food. Doing the things I liked the most and never realizing the things it would lead up to. When I got fat I started to get bullied in school for some time and my parents and other related ones started to look at me worried about my condition , but I did not care, I was happy.…

My interests led me to join a mission trip to Cincinnati, Ohio my freshman and sophomore years. The place I loved the most was the Sandwich Window where I openly interacted with homeless people. It was impressive to see how I could brighten people’s day by simply talking to them with a big smile. They gave me hugs and showered me with compliments; I even bonded with a talented artist who drew a picture of me that I still keep in my photo book. The amazing experience I had about 10 days of the mission trip turned my world upside…

After taking the HUM 270H course and learning about leadership and volunteering, I have decided to change my major. I will now be majoring in Nonprofit Administration. When deciding what I would chose for my service learning project I wanted to incorporate something that I could connect with and I would enjoy doing. For my project I made goals and planned out the activities, I learned more about myself and the community, as well as how this project connected to concepts learned in class. I wanted to leave the Our Lady’s Inn with a better understanding of how a nonprofit organization worked and I wanted to make a connection with the children, to let them know that so many people care about them.…
