While on Appalachia Service Project, we would service the people in need. These people were living in homes that were crooked and falling down. Compared to their life, my life was perfect. The trip made me realize that I had everything I needed, and my wants were not as severe as I originally thought they were. Some of the families that we served couldn't even put food on the table, and at home it's unimaginable skipping a meal. To learn these things you must put yourself out there and I had to take a step out of my comfort zone to be able to make me a better-rounded person. These lessons are not ones you can study before you have a test. With these, I was placed in a situation and I learn after the situation was resolved.
The hardest obstacle I had to overcome was definitely how I had to change my way of life for a whole week. To learn what I did I had to give up sleeping in a comfortable space, my cell phone, and most importantly I couldn’t rely on my parents for anything because they were not there. This especially taught me how lucky I was because my parents do so much to support me that I don’t realize on a typical day.
At the conclusion of Appalachia Service Project, when I got home and reflected on what I learned I noticed that I learned so much that was disguised as something else. The lessons I learned, meant so much to me that it was a teaching of a life
